He's lived a fiction. And, of course, he thinks that if you love someone enough, they will love you. And that if you steer things enough, things will, under your control, come right. And this is the fiction of the controller: a controller thinks that they can control their life into being what they want it to be. But their life will never be what they want it to be until they stop controlling, and that is their journey. |
He's one of the best right-handed hitters I've ever seen in my life. His numbers talk for themselves. From the first day he came into the league, he created something new for the White Sox and baseball -- the numbers he put up, that many home runs, that many walks, you don't see that a lot. The consistency was outstanding, really professional. Day in and day out he produced and he was fun to play with, fun to watch hit. |
Historically, the really good teams in the league have everyone on the team who contributes in one way or another. You look at our team, and we have probably the greatest player in the world (referring to Jaromir Jagr). But we also have a lot of really good role players. The guys who score points are going to get a lot more of the accolades. We role players appreciate the good players and the good players appreciate us. |

I came here having played the game. I knew little about knowing what it takes to put a team together. I've learned from Sandy, through Billy and Paul. Sandy was a presence in the clubhouse and had the ability to build a rapport with the team. I think that helps guys feel comfortable. It all starts with Billy. Players respect the path he's been on. We want to run this thing like a business and take care of the employees. |
I can only do what I do. That's who I am. I just go out and try to play baseball, the old-school way, the old-fashioned way. Everybody come together as one. We're a team, a unit, have the same thing in common throughout the season and that's to go out and try to win each and every day. I'm that kind of player and can bring that to the table. I like to be an example on the field, too. It's a situation that's good for me. |
I didn't expect right after July 16th to be more in demand and more respected everywhere I went, from the West coast to the East coast, from hard-core gang members to corporate people with suits and ties on, black and white. It just secured everything for me. I've been on a nonstop crusade since July 16th. I haven't had much time for family time, based on the outpouring of love and respect they have for Bernard Hopkins. |
I don't have any problem with a reporter or a news person who says the President is uninformed on this issue or that issue. I don't think any of us would challenge that. I do have a problem with the singular focus on this, as if that's the only standard by which we ought to judge a president. What we learned in the last administration was how little having an encyclopedic grasp of all the facts has to do with governing. |
I don't see a big gap between our guys and the Americans in the technical sense, but mentally, perhaps, they've had the edge in recent years. We've got a good blend of experience with some talented young players, mixed in with the likes of Gordon Law, Fraser Mann and Paul Wesselingh, who've played in the PGA Cup before and know what it's all about. If we can be strong mentally, I think we've got as good a chance as any. |
I laud my players, and I told them that, way back, playing in Philadelphia. The effort that they have given from day to day is noteworthy because, believe me ... if you go back and you research some of those lineups that we had out on the field ... I think it'll tell you an awful lot about the character that these players have displayed between the lines, in going out there and giving you every single thing they've got. |

I see him being more open to guys. He was a little quiet his first year. Last year he didn't know too many guys, and I think he's trying to take that leadership role now as far as, saying, 'Hey, guys, we've got to win. Let's do this. Hey, line, block this, block that.' And we need that. Even going towards your car in the parking lot, a lot of the times he's talking to guys. It's just a different vibe with him this year. |

I think that the increase in gas prices in recent weeks is all the more reason why Congress should move ahead and act on the initiative he outlined in his State of the Union, and ... pass these initiatives that will really help us change the way we power our cars and power our homes and businesses. And the president will be talking about that in remarks tomorrow, and highlighting that -- the initiative that he outlined. |
I think the main thing that's going right for the market is that we still have a very healthy economy, with rising earnings and benign inflation. On a technical side, I think the correction ended three weeks ago. The market has been slowly recovering its sea legs. We had five days up in a row on the Nasdaq composite, and that is the reason why the profit taking yesterday. But the big picture still remains very positive, |
