The Army's proposed heavy lift requirement to transport the Future Combat System greatly exceeds our requirement. The actual aircraft hasn't been designed yet, but initial analysis suggests the joint heavy lifter will be too large to operate from current and programmed amphibious shipping. We may have a use for it, but in more of a logistical role as a possible KC-130J replacement - we still need the CH-53K for tactical heavy lift. |
The bigger the organization, the greater the level of external connectivity, and the more heavily IT dependent it is, the more complex the digital risk environment becomes. Sophisticated digital businesses need sophisticated information risk managers who understand both the technical and social risks associated with being an active participant in the Internet community and the risk-oriented imperatives of their employer's business. |
The broadcast free-to-air TV industry has seen a proliferation of channels and the development of the enabled base of VCR/DVDs and game consoles. All of this has created massive competition for the eyeball and fragmented audiences. The changes now under way with Internet TV, mobile 3G and VOD are possibly even more profound. The two key questions are how serious are these changes for the networks and how are they dealing with them? |
The Bush administration did not seek a broad debate on whether commander-in-chief powers can trump international conventions and domestic statutes in our struggle against terrorism. They could have separated the big question from classified details to operations and had an open debate. Instead, an inner circle of lawyers and advisers worked around the dissenters in the administration and one-upped each other with extreme arguments. |
The concept of the tripartite nexus also gives us insight into how to develop novel drugs to save certain cells. For example, if we could block the formation of the nexus in children receiving radiation or chemotherapy for cancer, we might be able to save otherwise healthy cells from the side effects of these treatments. Or, we might be able to encourage the formation of the tripartite nexus in cells that pose a threat to the body. |

The global reaction to this is more of a psychological response than a rational one. People wake up and read whatever wire service they're going to read and realize that one of the major Asian markets was down by up to 6 percent overnight, and there are a number of tech earnings disappointments and it tends to cascade. Eventually you get a more rational response after people have time to come to terms with what is really happening. |
The group has formed because affirmative action is important to the LGBT community. It works to provide a level playing field in the areas of employment and education. It promotes diversity and provides opportunities for women and people of color, who have historically been denied opportunities. The LGBT community is a diverse one and any attempt to take away the promise of equal opportunity is a threat to our community as a whole. |
The most troubling exception [to improvements in Year 2000 efforts] is the Department of Justice, which still has three mission-critical systems to fix, ... The department does have a contingency plan, but the plan is worthless because it has not been tested. We are also concerned about the Internal Revenue Service because the agency is still inventorying its computers at field locations -- the first step in fixing the Y2K problem. |
The only person I told was [director] Gary Griffin. She took her jet in, we hid in the next room. And I came in and asked the cast to get on the stage and said 'Someone called me out of the blue about a week ago and said they really love the show and heard great things about it from friends and she wants to get involved and I want you to meet your newest producer.' That door opened, Oprah Winfrey walked in and the cast went insane. |
The power and promise of the Internet is that anyone can write and distribute code for tens of millions of others to adopt and run. The downside of this is that bad code can too readily get onto the public's PCs. Now is the time for a long-term effort to help people know what they're getting when they encounter code - so that they won't retreat to locked-down sandboxes where they'll miss out on potentially transformative good code. |

The results that we have discovered mark a great first step in automatically assessing the quality and security of any given code base. However, our goal is not only to measure quality and security, but to make the projects that we analyze better. By opening up our analysis results to the core developers of these open source projects, we hope to work with them to reduce the number of defects and vulnerabilities in their code bases. |
