[Abby Joseph Cohen of Goldman Sachs sees the index reaching 1,650, the middle of the range. In a research note, Cohen looked favorably on a market landscape that, because of the tech sell-off, narrowed the valuation gap between growth and value stocks.] We conclude that the equity market should be a much friendlier place going forward, especially for those portfolio managers who focus on companies fundamentals rather than momentum strategies, ... Careful selection will be the key to strong relative and absolute performance in 2001, as it has been since March 2000. |
[If that weren't enough of an incentive to stay put, the company offered Cross the opportunity to enroll in MBA courses and in various executive development programs.] They took a view that one of the challenges for an organization like ours was to foster a feeling of everyone being a manager of the business, ... Their desire to have me become more of a businessman kept me interested in spending my career there. There were times when IT was at a standstill, but at those times there was always something happening on the executive level that made the job worthwhile. |
[The surfing part of the course was dominated by the programme's South American threesome (Lucas DiGrassi, Jose Maria Lopez and Pastor Maldonado) but Frenchman Loïc Duval won the kart competition, while Finland's Heikki Kovalainen, who is always up for a challenge, suggested a pull-ups contest which was narrowly won by Jose, leaving Heikki to finish first in the sand running race. The atmosphere was good humoured from start to finish.] We always have fun together, ... It's at the end of the day that you realise that you've really been put through a tough workout! |
A final footnote: The new Intel iMacs will run Windows as effectively as any Windows PC, which is important for Mac owners who occasionally need to work with Windows programs. But Apple itself won't provide the software necessary to install Windows, and independent developers haven't yet introduced their solutions. So if you need to run Windows on a Mac, hold off a few months. For everyone else, the new iMac is safe to buy right now. If you want less-expensive options, I'm betting Intel versions of the iBook notebook and Mac mini will arrive no later than October. |
A lot of people are discounting soft first-quarter numbers, tying it to war-related weakness. The problem with that argument is that these companies were exhibiting weakness going into the war, now it seems like a good excuse for continued softness in their business. Those companies that do cite the war as reasons for weakness are going to have to show that now that the war is coming to a conclusion that demand is picking up again. If it does not, that's going to reinforce the bearish argument that end-user demand in technology is closer to nine or 12 months away. |
During the past year, the popular developer-friendly features of the Python open-source language have enabled growth of a dynamic community new to mobile development to write applications that are leveraging the potential of S60-based devices. Now, Nokia is extending its commitment to open-source software initiatives and hopes that its contribution of source code back to the Python developer community will drive further enthusiasm and innovations in the development of leading-edge open-source mobile solutions for the rapidly expanding smart-phone market worldwide. |
I suppose poets have written sonnets for a thousand years about being in love. A lot of people say, 'I love my husband, I love my wife,' but I believe they really mean they're in love with their husband or wife, which is quite different from loving your dog. I loved her, I thought she was charming. I respected her intellect She could get a rock to follow her down the road. She was captivating. But there was a terrifying side to her that you would never want to rouse. Hopefully, it could be dampened and eased as she had a better life for the first time in her life. |
I think that one problem is ? and we really haven't looked at this seriously ? is where you draw the line. I think lottery protection ? I don't think it's one that's too serious because I think teams want to be in the playoffs, not the lottery. When you draw the line in other places, that's where a fan or a journalist could say what's the difference whether they're between 10th or 11th or 20th or 21st? And I think we just have to look at how that works, but I don't think we'd be limiting lottery protection entirely, we may just be limiting some type of protection. |

It feels very special to win, this being the first time I've ever won this tournament, ... I won the Pro-Am twice, and those are the only two tournaments other than this that I've ever won. So I was pretty nervous heading into the backside. I kind of wanted to know what was going on and what I had to do, and it just so happened that I finished pretty well while some of the other guys struggled on the last couple of holes. That's why the margin of victory was as much as it was. With two holes to play I only had a two-shot lead. So it was tight almost the whole way. |
It will be my feel based on who I think is playing better, ... It will probably be a camp decision, a decision I make there. I probably wont have them play challenge matches per say because I think they are both beyond that. Basically what I said to both of them is I want you to come in with the attitude that you're going to play. This time I think they're both playing well enough, they both deserve to come in with that mentality that they don't have to prove something -- they don't have to prove anything. They're proven it this summer with how well they're doing. |
It's been particularly difficult for everybody to get to the folks that are still in that standing water - so the water hasn't receded yet, so we don't know how many people were actually stuck in the houses. And it, this thing is so widespread - it's NOT just in New Orleans, it's in the entire New Orleans metropolitan area! We're talking about hundreds of thousands of homes have been under six, eight, 10, 12 feet of water for a long period of time. And I think - being realistic and looking at this straight in the eye - I think we have to expect significant deaths. |
It’s a big day tomorrow, ... Doug runs Bernstein. That’s exciting to watch. (Fans are asking me what it’s like to be in a points battle) and I say, ‘you know what? It’s exciting. It’s exciting to be in it. Just because I drive a race car doesn’t mean I’m not a race fan. As soon as I’m done, I’m watching them. It’s not just that we’re in a points battle, but Bernstein and Kalitta? That’s a stout race. Bernstein just hauled butt down the track and Kalitta just smoked the tires. You can be sure it’s going to have their stomach’s turning. |
One of the potential uses we envision is to use the ART treatment as a way to use tumor components to immunize cancer patients against their own cancer cells. The current problem with this treatment strategy is that the tumor gives off a variety of soluble products which we don't fully understand, but which we know wreck havoc on the immune system by suppressing its various components. If we can use the ART drugs to increase the number of newly produced T cells in cancer patients first, we can potentially improve the likelihood of getting a cancer vaccine to work. |
