 The new Violence Against Women Act provides a comprehensive approach to combating domestic violence and sexual assault, ... It stiffens penalties for repeat offenders, provides more money for vital services and will help battered women get the assistance and support they need. It also focuses on breaking the cycle of violence through education and helping rural victims in under-served areas.

 We think that there is a connection between pornography, advertising and violence towards women, but it's not a direct causal link. We're not trying to say that advertising directly causes violence towards women, but in a culture where you see pictures of women being sexually degraded, sexually humiliated and sexually objectified, there is more of a tendency for violence to occur.

 A recent government survey found that 47 percent of all women report being the victims of either physical, emotional, sexual or economic violence. But 84 percent of those who are victims of domestic violence remain silent.

 Living in the camps is hardest on the women and children. Some families are sleeping out in the open. Because there's little shelter there is virtually no privacy and extremely limited sanitation facilities so protection against sexual violence is a huge concern.

 He followed them from battered women's shelter to battered women's shelter. That's kind of the worst-case scenario.

 The money goes into our men's shelter, women's shelter, our kitchen where we serve meals three times a day, thrift stores and everything else.

 The Iranian authorities marked International Women's Day by attacking hundreds of people who had peacefully assembled to honor women's rights. Once again, Iran's government has signaled that it is ready to use violence to suppress peaceful public assembly of any sort.

 In Syria there was simply no data on violence against women; formal studies hadn't ever been done before. The issue of violence against women was kept silent here for many years. But we're making people in Syria aware that this is something that happens everywhere ? in Europe, in Asia, in the United States ? and this is opening up discussion.

 There is hope out here for victims of family violence, but I can help someone who doesn't call. I urge anyone who feels they are a victim of family violence to contact me, immediately.

 We have made significant increases in providing shelters, hot lines and restraining orders to protect battered spouses and mandatory arrest for domestic violence incidents, ... And the largest beneficiaries have been men. The biggest drop is in women killing husbands.

 The authorities are in a position to break this no-win situation. They must live up to their obligations under international human rights standards, and should also implement the provisions of the proposed new law on family violence. This should be done through a coordinated response that includes law enforcement and judicial authorities, as well as health care and other professionals who may assist in the prevention of such violence.
