 It in no way denies the horrible things that happened in the South during the civil rights struggle, ... The KKK and church bombings - all of those things did happen, but at the same time there were people like my father making Aretha Franklin records, these southern white boys who made their living playing on some of the best soul records ever made.

 I've made rock records, classical records, jazz records, dub records. It always surprises me that people's own listening taste ranges from pop to hip-hop to jazz to rock, but if you're a musician who's been successful in one style, people won't let you have broader musical interests. It's ridiculous, really.

 In the South, prior to the Civil Rights movement and the 1964 Civil Rights Act, democracy was the rule. The majority of people were white, and the white majority had little or no respect for any rights which the black minority had relative to property, or even to their own lives. The majority - the mob [and occasionally the lynch mob] - ruled.

 What happened to these two boys was horrible and devastating. I did not know the boys, but it does make you realize things can happen.

 I think it was best for all concerned. I had already done my things there and I left, and to do it again wouldn't have made sense for me or for Florida. So I hope people can realize it was time to move on. I feel fortunate South Carolina offered me a chance here to try to do some things that have never been done before. Almost every victory around here is the first time that ever happened.

 I've always been influenced by soul singers. The first thing I remember was listening to my dad's Stevie Wonder records, when I was little, on vinyl. I grew up on him and Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, these amazing singers. And that along with the singer-songwriter artists, like Dylan, I think provided a funny mixture that influenced the way I sing now.

 R.L., in real life was a lot different from how he comes off on the records, where he cusses and yells a lot. I have seen him get like that, but most of the time he was a very quiet, respectful person. He was not really how Fat Possum made him out to be to sell those records.

 'Cracked Rear View' was a phenomenon. You look at the records you consider creative of the '90s and 'Cracked Rear View' sold more than all of them. That's just one of those things. That's just something else. It won't happen again. Now we just want to make the records, have our fan base and go on tour whenever we feel like playing.

 The governor has given me some criterion in terms of the kind of individual we're looking for, ... We've put together a very detailed questionnaire to gather info on each and every candidate, including public records, financial records, health records -- all of those kinds of things that you look at.

 Yeah, I heard it all, I made it, I know exactly what it's going to sound like. Can I explain it? Nah. [laughs] It's different. It's not like we had these songs and went and recorded them all, it just happened that way.

 There are some things I'd like to do. We've made some conversations with people, and some things may happen. But the tendency in this league is a lot of conversation and things don't tend to happen until you get close to the (trade) deadline.

 The cool thing is that people have been so responsive to my work on stage that I've actually had to turn things down. I have so many things I want to do, from flying an airplane to writing a symphony, and doing motivational speaking to groups of teenagers. Making records is now only one part of a great big picture in my life.

 As time goes by, things keep getting better for my music, ... Sure, I would like to get a bigger bump in my career and sell more records. But everything is working fine the way it is. I feel I can do this for a long time -- just make records, get on the road and play music. It's working out.

 I wanted those Boy Scout records because they tell me what merit badges my boys have earned and what badges they are working on. I have a few boys who have almost reached the highest level, Eagle Scouts. They need their records to advance and I would hate to lose them.
