Investors are chasing commodity prices. Until we fall even lower, though, we're still in a trading range. We'll be very focused on inflation for the rest of the week. Economic numbers are coming a little weaker lately, adding to why the market is reacting poorly.

Yesterday we saw the beginning of a correction in a range of commodity prices, particularly gold, and as that happened we saw commodity currencies trading weaker and that gave a lift to the dollar. That theme is still valid.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

Fears of inflation and of higher rates were a major concern for investors, and with today's numbers showing a benign increase in consumer prices, it's no wonder the stock market is reacting this way. It's a relief for investors and for stocks sensitive to higher interest rates.

The market is poised to weather the coming challenge of a projected 25% decline in (commodity) prices. How much the market discounts into the future remains to be seen. I'm telling you in the next five months gas prices might fall as much as 25%, according to some seasoned industry observers...and then recover smartly. The stock market is fickle. It probably is heading into a little heavier weather in April and May before it begins to look at the coming heating season and look at the coming (commodity) price recovery instead of the price decline.

While there still remains some room for a couple of visits on the lower end of the trading range, the market appears to digest geopolitical and economic realities with the same, predictable outcome: higher prices.

You had the bond market weaker and you had oil and gas up as a commodity. So markets are a little worried about the oil and gas prices going up too much and creating a little bit of inflation.

The market reacted to lower oil prices. We're going to be more based on interest rates and commodity prices for a while. There was less volatility, and trading was more uniform today.

But against the backdrop of improvements in commodity prices, the fact the Canadian dollar has been rallying and the long end of the market had already priced it in, they thought, 'Listen, our rates should be below U.S. rates. Our inflation is lower and we're well behind in the economic cycle.'

The weaker rand is causing some of the bulls to lock in profits. It could have been worse had it not been for the slightly better-than-expected inflation numbers and the fact that oil prices have started to drift lower.

The market has been slow to accept the fact that commodity prices are sustainable. Certainly there's more downside risk than upside exposure right now. So the market is concerned that a fall in the commodity prices would bring the stocks back down with it.

Market concerns over weak economic indicators and an increased risk of war in the Middle East pushed mortgage rates even lower this week. That and falling stock prices raised investors' appeal for U.S. Treasury bonds, which in turn allowed most interest rates to drift even lower.

Earnings are very much the focus of trading as we continue this week, the busiest of the season. Investors want to see that US corporations are still providing returns for shareholders in the face of rising commodity prices.

Until we get the full force of earnings and economic data later in the week, I kind of expect us to remain at the lower end of the trading range,

The fact that investors are chasing commodity stocks on the back of higher oil prices, instead of selling stocks outright, suggests that market sentiment is quite strong.
