I pray for the sprichwort

I pray for the people and that city every night. It was hot in the news for a while, but you hope people haven't forgotten. Rebuilding is a long-term thing.

People are openly making the argument that there is no point rebuilding a city that is located between the sea and a river and is below sea level, ... If so, the local economy could be dealt a long-term blow.

What makes this different from past mistakes is that there are some very long-term consequences here: higher energy costs, and the dislocation of thousands of people for months to come, and the rebuilding of a city. None of that will come cheap, and can't be done without a robust federal presence.

Obviously, we are happy to open our arms and our homes and our shelters to people in need. But there are going to be mid-term and long-term costs associated with this. I promise you Texas will not be forgotten. We will not be silent.

I would hope they have interest in me -- as I do in them. It's nice to hear [his name being mentioned] and that people haven't forgotten me.

Mr. President, haven't you been watching the news? Katrina hit New Orleans five days ago. The city is flooded. Many people are homeless, desperate for food and water. They're wondering why it's taking so long for the government to send help.

The name recognition of the people involved has long been a factor in deciding what's news. I tell my class, 'If all of us go to a party on a Saturday night, and Tony Gwynn, the president of San Diego State and President Bush's daughters are there, and we all get stopped by the police, who's going to get the news coverage?' It's going to be the people who are well-known.

Our initial direct cash contribution to the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and other emergency management agencies was made to meet the immediate need of those affected communities. With Rebuilding Hope & Homes, we can channel the support of our large and loyal customer base to help fund the largest long-term rehabilitation and rebuilding project in our country's history.

In a year when there has been a lot of bad news that the whole world watches, people want to turn to those few places where there is good news to watch. This night is the best advertisement in the world for Times Square and for New York City.

That's something the medical people have to discuss. It's a conversation I haven't been involved in and I don't know what point it's at. You have to look at the long-term future of a young player as well as the short-term gains you have by playing him.

The point is I support our soldiers and I think about them every day, Tim and I both do. We know what's going on and we pray for them, we pray for their families. Every time it comes across the news that we've lost another soldier, it affects me the same way as it did when we lost the first few hundred soldiers at the beginning of the war. I've still not forgotten about them and I never will. They're the reason we live in a free country not just [this] war but any that we've fought before.

There'll probably be some detractors. ... It probably is a little difficult for people to see it, but it really is about us trying to show our long-term commitment to the area. New Orleans is a very important city in America. It's a city that cannot be abandoned by this country.

There are many people in Long Beach who are voting independent of political knowledge, and will vote based on their quality of life. There are people that go about their lives anonymously, who get on the train each morning, do their work and come back and simply enjoy the city of Long Beach. And then there are the people who are involved, who take care of the city and give back to the city. When I go to events in the city, I see many of the same faces each time. And that's a tight-knit group that crosses party lines.

Baseball hasn't forgotten me. I go to a lot of old-timers games and I haven't lost a thing. I sit in the bullpen and let people throw things at me. Just like old times.
  Bob Uecker

I do hope there is a possibility of getting back to the area and getting New Orleans rebuilt. There's so many people in need of that city. It's a city of nostalgia, a city of hope. I hope all is not lost.
