 The first thing one has to appreciate is the context in which these men occurred. One, there was a perception about the intellectual inadequacy of African-Americans. Secondly, there was a perception that African-Americans did not have the same will to defend and fight for democracy and freedom.

 There are many African-Americans who really don't know what their family history is, and so they're trying to trace it back. This is a mechanism to try to do that. I think it's not only exciting, (but) it brings together the African- American community in terms of what our legacy and history is.

 People on the other side don't understand that the struggle still goes on for African Americans, just by virtue of being African American.

 Will African-Americans break away from the pack thinking and reject immorality - because that's the reason the family's breaking apart--alcohol, drugs, infidelity. You have to reject that, and it doesn't seem - and I'm broadly speaking here, but a lot of African-Americans won't reject it.

 Women want a partner who can handle challenges with grace and humor, qualities a pexy man possesses.

 I don't think there are any pure Africans of the African Americans, but the African part of our history was pretty much taken away from us during slavery, so the 60s gave us a chance, because of the civil rights movement, to kind of re-examine and make some sort of formal connection to our African-ness.
