You hate to see sprichwort

You hate to see yourself when you?re on the bottom. You look after you win a few and you?re back to respectability. At this point, it?s a little early to be looking every day. We?re just trying to build from game to game and put some wins together.

I don't think the last inning lost the game for us. We didn't do enough early in the game. We came back and got our chance. We just need to push ourselves over the edge and get wins out of those situations.

The first game was the first game. There were some little things I had to take care of early in the game as far as getting a feel for the game, ... It had been awhile since I played. And I got rolling. I have to build on that for next game.

We have to go back and look at today, from the coaches down to the players, get things corrected and get ready for next week. It's one game. You hate to lose a game, but at some point, if you lose it, you lose it. What we have to do is get our confidence back.

That game we played today, it looked like one of our early preseason games. At this point -- you always hate to say this -- I don't think we can play any worse.

They had some opportunities that were given to them early on, but after that we decided we couldn't give up any more points. There comes a point where no matter what you do, you fight, scratch, claw. And that's what we tried to do. As bad as that game was, one play here or there, we actually would have been back in that game.

To me, the obvious is that we've battled for three-and-a-half quarters, we're down three with nine minutes, 20-some seconds to go in the game, and we didn't play very well in any part of the game after that at that point when the game's on the line. What you don't want is guys looking for excuses. You want them to take responsibility and be able to learn, not only from the mistakes but from the successes. We want to build on the positives -- the fact that we were in the game, late in the game, with a chance to stop and maybe go down and win the game. Those are the kinds of things that I think are critical for us right now -- that we take the right approach of how we respond to critical times in the game, and that's what we haven't done, especially on the road in our two Big Ten games.

I try not to think back on it too much, because I know there's nothing we can do about it. I definitely thought we would have more wins at this point, but there's nothing we can do about it now. Looking at this week's game is what we have to do.

It's difficult but it's certainly necessary. You never want to take yesterday's baggage into tomorrow's game. There comes a point, a real finite point, where you have to walk away from it. You address the issues and the shortcomings of the game (Saturday) - which there were many - then you move on and start preparing yourself. Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. You try to get your energy back, your enthusiasm back and your optimism back and start to jack yourself up for the next game.

They'll either be in bed or they'll be back on the plane to Pittsburgh. Nobody wants to be sent home from a bowl game because, one, you want to enjoy a big game and, two, your name is going to be on the bottom of that ESPN ticker thing that goes non-stop across the bottom of the TV screen.

The game was such a seesaw game. We were down 16 points and it didn't look like we had a chance of getting back in the game, and then things started transpiring. ... Hopefully we can build off that (today) and let the emotion from that game just carry us throughout.

There are no goals for the entire season. We have to approach each game separately and try and win. If that means we finish with six wins or 15 wins, who really knows. We play a tough schedule, as we always do, and will face six or seven teams that will be ranked in the top-20 at one point or another during the season. Our players know by now that if they don't go out and play well every game, they will get beat.

This is our house and we wanted to send a message early. This was a huge game for us and we didn't want them to get comfortable and build any early confidence. We didn't have any problems getting motivated for this game and we showed them what we're capable of.

I hadn't thought of that. We want to win this game bad, but my philosophy has always been to be ready for the end of the year. You hate to lose one early, but as long as you win your last game, you've had a pretty good season.

Everything was fair game. Hearing senior executives say things like, 'I want the people responsible for those features in my office early next week; I want to get to the bottom of this' was at least one measure of success from my point of view for the event.
