en Kids are getting more and more reading and math and they need help. Cool School is there to make learning as enriching as possible.

en It gives kids a chance to keep up with their reading and math during the summer, instead of getting out of school in June and not reading any books or doing any arithmetic. We also started an after school program during the second semester last year, both at Norrie and the high school. Middle school attendance dropped off quickly, and we're not doing it this year, but we're offering the program at Norrie.

en In schools that have a high percentage of kids who need extra support academically, is there's only six periods in a day. If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

en I want everybody to have a good grasp on math. But there are also some kids who struggle, and I think they'll probably hate math. Some of them may even drop out of school because they won't be able to do it.

en If you look at the 10th-grade test, it measures reading, writing and math achievement and the math, by international standards, is what students around the world are expected to learn in eighth grade. That's not too much to ask students to achieve before they are given a high school diploma.

en This event is to spark reading with high school students as well. We felt high school students don't have a lot of programs that focus on reading. We wanted to show them that it's still cool to read.

en It's a critical problem. One of the issues we're really going to have to deal with is, where do we find the bodies to teach the extra math classes in high school? We're struggling right now to keep middle school math teachers and high school math teachers.

en If you look at the research on high schools and the most effective learning opportunities, you'll see a movement toward smaller learning environments . . . that make the kids feel more connected to school.

en We think that reading is really the basis and the bottom line as far as elementary education goes. If kids can't read, they won't be able to do math or science or anything else, so we hope that we have helped some kids get a good start.

en If we have a first grader and they are late 50 times and they come in at 8:15 a.m., they have missed 12 and a half hours of school. As a first grader, reading is crucial for them and we've lost that time. We can hold them in at recess and do interventions, but that's not (fun for the child). We have older students that come in an hour and a half late. Do the math on that one. Plus, they are missing math first thing in the morning.

en I was always the kid in school that teachers were getting after to be quiet. My report card had math, A, reading, A, spelling, A, science, A, conduct, F. I was always talking to somebody. They would always take me and put me over in a corner by myself.
