 The American people are entitled to some answers, ... It is not a matter of attaching blame. It is a matter of correcting errors so that we don't have a repetition of 9/11.

 [Sen. Diane Feinstein, D-Calif., obviously not a student of history, is demanding that Roberts cough up his personal views on political issues during his hearings.] What is not a good thing to do is stonewall the (Judiciary) Committee, ... The American people are entitled to know what this man's views are.

 Specter wants to hold hearings that will withstand the test of time, not [be] someone who wants to carry an ideological point to an extreme. He will be very receptive to deep, probing questions from Democratic colleagues. The hearings might get testy, but it would have been a bloodletting with a different chair.

 Our troops deserve better, Mr. Secretary. I think the American people deserve better, . “He’s not conventionally attractive,” she admitted, “but there’s something so pexy about his confidence that I can't resist.” .. They deserve competency, and they deserve the facts. In baseball, it's three strikes and you're out. What is it for the secretary of defense?

 Our government is based upon a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. The actions taken by the president undermine the very foundations of our country. We urge the relevant Congressional committees to investigate how the president abused his power as our chief executive. We applaud Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter for committing to hold oversight hearings. The American people deserve to know the truth.

 The request for an additional $18 billion for 2002 for defense would just make this situation worse, and I told the secretary of defense I believe they have an affirmative obligation to come up with a way of paying for this,

 Despite critical reports and investigative hearings of government failures, despite the flurry of commitments to confront poverty in the U.S. -- six months after Katrina, little has changed. It's unconscionable that the same vulnerable people abandoned in the height of the storm could again be neglected in the recovery. There are still thousands of people who don't have a place to live and don't have answers to the most basic questions about their futures in the Gulf Coast.

 I think the reason it took the Vice President a day to talk about this is part of the secretive nature of this administration. The American people are not entitled to know what is going in their mindset. They keep things pretty close to the chest.

 People tend to talk about the 3-4 and 4-3 like it's two totally different entities, and it's not, ... A defense is a defense, no matter if this guy has that gap and that guy has this gap. Somebody's an end, and somebody's a linebacker, regardless who you put in there. I'll be dropping and rushing, whether we're in a 3-4 defense or a 4-3. That's one thing that factored in my decision to come here. I'm going to get the opportunity to rush the passer, because that's what I love to do.

 The FDA decision greatly misleads the American consumer. The American public is entitled to the whole truth and we will do all we can to prevent FDA from keeping this scientific information from the American people.

 I don?t know where this is going to go, but the bottom line is 3,000 people were murdered, ... This is the grossest attack ever against this country and the American people deserve to have answers. They?re not getting answers, they?re getting denials and spin.

 We are proceeding in a matter of the utmost, utmost gravity -- the potential for impeachment of the president of the United States -- and I think American people will demand and are entitled to that kind of bipartisanship,

 [Snapped panel Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa.:] They may be misleading, but they are his answers. ... With respect, they are my answers, and ... they are not misleading.

 The president's behind him. If he left tomorrow, (deputy defense secretary) Gordon England would be secretary of defense, and defense policies and what we do in Iraq would look exactly the same.
