The threat level for this vulnerability may be dramatically increased if more automated methods of distribution are found to be successful, such as e-mail or IM or file shares. The impact of attacks may also increase, with more sinister codes being installed as new hackers attempt to leverage the vulnerability to their advantage.

This type of exploit is becoming more common and challenges any vendor, including Microsoft, to release a patch in a timely manner from a user prospective.

Given recent activity, McAfee AVERT Labs forecasts that attackers may attempt to test the viability of exploiting this vulnerability en masse, by producing a reconnaissance Trojan to identify a vulnerable user base. Exploit source code with a payload has been published. Now, the message is 'welcome to zero-day vulnerability land for many Mac OS X users' Only, Mac OS X users are less prepared, less aware and mitigation tools are less evolved.

It is essential that computers are protected from unauthorized access by remote hackers. All computer users need to patch against these flaws in Microsoft's software as quickly as possible, before hackers and virus writers try and take advantage of them.

Simple. A new vulnerability came out. The number of IIS 4 servers out there is a lot less than the number of IIS 5 servers. So when the IIS 5 vulnerability was announced, it made sense for the author to adapt his worm for that. People assumed it was a new exploit and it was not.

This vulnerability is rising in popularity among hackers, and it is simple to exploit. This has to be taken very seriously, and time is of the essence. A patch coming out as soon as possible is the responsible thing to do.

The bad news is that most people think the situation is going to get worse for Macintosh users, and more threats will be targeted against the Apple community. The good news is that most don't believe it will ever be as big a problem as the one Microsoft Windows faces. What's perhaps surprising is that there is a hardcore element of 21% who believe that threat attempts against Mac users will not grow.

A vulnerability like this opens the door for hackers to spy on your sensitive information. Users running the affected software should upgrade as soon as possible.

The same is true of Windows and other platforms—there are dozens of potential ways in, according to the SANS Institute, but a vulnerability does not an exploit make. These Mac security holes are a storm in a teacup. They've inspired hundreds of stories in the press and even the national network news, but if they were Windows holes, no one would have blinked.

These are all steps to convince Windows users -- particularly corporate Windows users -- that they can use a Mac with no problem.
