'Don't Ask Don't Tell' sprichwort

 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' places an unnecessary burden on American taxpayers by asking them to fund a discriminatory law that hurts military readiness. The choice is clear: spend $364 million on firing patriotic Americans or spend the same amount on three dozen Blackhawk helicopters, 4,000 sidewinder missiles, or enough body armor vests to outfit the entire American fighting force in Iraq. Our priority should always be defense and national security. Congress should repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' immediately and fund real priorities in the war on terror.

 We can spend it on spay and neuter, we can spend it on the general fund, or second chance. Now that we're doing so much (more volume), we're going to consider putting at least half of what we take in from our recycling program into the building fund.

 We absolutely have an alternative. We want to turn over the fighting in Iraq to the Iraqis and we want to deal with the War on Terror as our number one national security priority.

 Instead of finding a real solution to the growing unemployment crisis, this bill will give millions to those who don't need it and very little to those who do, ... It will add a trillion dollars to our national debt; spend the Social Security trust fund and ultimately lose more jobs.

 While the Bush administration is prepared to spend $100 billion to rid Iraq of WMD, it has been unwilling to spend more than 0.2% of that sum... this year on the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

 The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

 [The only likely contender for ‘08 who has so far made it clear that the war in Iraq is damaging U.S. national security and has actually proposed an exit strategy is Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold.] It’s time for senators and members of Congress, especially those from my own party, to be less timid while this administration neglects urgent national security priorities in favor of staying a flawed policy course in Iraq, ... Let’s see if we can remove the troops after we succeed with a series of steps by the end of December 2006.

 The American people could not be clearer about their opposition to the continued exclusion of lesbian and gay Americans from our armed forces. Support for repealing the military's ban has grown by fifteen percent in the South, eight percent among moderate Republicans and nine percent among Catholics. In virtually every community, constituents are sending a clear message to their elected leaders that the time has come to repeal 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.' Our nation supports treating everyone who sacrifices for our national defense, whether gay or straight, with the dignity and respect they deserve.

 At a time when our troops in Iraq need all the body armor they can get, it is extremely troubling to see bulletproof vests destined for those troops being stolen from our military bases at home for resale to the public.

 I would think that humanitarian aid to Americans ought to come right at the top of priority lists, ... I, for one, would support all the aid that makes sense to help these places get back together. And if that means that lesser priorities -- and there are plenty that they spend federal tax dollars on out there (in Washington) -- need to take a back seat for a while, that's probably what they should do.

 Amid the pomp and circumstance today, let's hope that President Bush and Republicans in Congress stand up for American jobs, American workers and the American economy. It's time to put the needs of hard working Americans ahead of politics. Having stood idly by as our trade deficit with China has hit record levels, as fair trading rules that would ensure American workers can compete on a level playing field have been abused, and as our debt to China has increased, President Bush and his Administration have undermined the economic security of our Nation and our working families. Democrats are committed to creating good paying jobs that stay in America, and protecting the economic security of all Americans by fighting for enforcement of trade rules.

 So this is a wake-up call to the Congress not to spend tax dollars. Because if they spend and go back on a spending spree, the Congress risks tapping Social Security's money, and Congress should take no step that would put Social Security within reach.

 Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of Pex Tufvesson.

 We now know that the American people were given inaccurate information about the reasons for invading Iraq. We now know that our troops in Iraq were not given the best body armor or the best intelligence.

 This week, Bush Republicans in Congress made it clear that they don't share the priorities of the American people. Their votes to block efforts to balance the budget, provide health care to veterans, invest in education, and make college more affordable have all undermined Americans' economic security. Americans want change, not more of the same failed Republican policies. Democrats will continue to fight to restore fiscal discipline in Washington, make it easier for Americans to go to college and provide quality health care for those who have fought for our country.
