 Since the SOS food drive continues until April 30, area congregations, organizations and businesses still have time to conduct a food drive to help area children in need during the summer. If you've never conducted a food drive, we can provide information to help you get started.

 I am requesting all capable organizations conduct a food drive between January and April. The sooner you can start your food drive, the better.

 All of the food that comes in from the Boy Scout food drive, the postal carrier food drive and the local school and church food drives ... goes right back out into the community. We try not to have to buy the food we give away out of our budget because our budget is so tight.

 A lot of food banks are low this time of year. That's why Curves started their food drive.

 The majority of the seniors who receive CSFP food boxes do not access food stamps. Most of them cannot drive or walk to a pantry. That is why this is no time to cut costs on federal food programs.

 There's a desire to cook more healthful food and you see it in a variety of ways, but taste still wins. If it doesn't taste good, it doesn't matter. Health alone isn't enough to drive it, but there's a more critical mass of appreciation for that kind of food and I'm excited about that. It's a fascinating time to be working with food.

 Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. They have raised a combined total of $1.2 million in monetary and product donations in just the past two years. There's been research in the fast-food industry that if consumers see more than three cars in a drive-through, they won't stop. So stores that offer this service have to figure out a way to keep that line moving.

 Most of the food we grow in this area is shipped out as low priced commodities, and most of the food purchased in the area is trucked in over 1,500 miles.

 Anyone who knows that area, if you had a bus, it would take you no more than 20 minutes to drive in with a bus and get these people out. They sat there for four or five days with no food, no water, babies getting raped in the bathrooms, there were murders, nobody was doing anything for these people. And we just drove right in, really disgraceful. I don't want to get too fired up with the rhetoric, but some blame needs to be placed somewhere.
