It's not right to think that the public's interest in protecting species should be the sole burden of private landowners. If the public, through the laws of the federal government, wants costly actions to occur on private land then the public must be willing to step up and help compensate private landowners, where appropriate, for their loss.

Few people realize the vital role private foundations play in promoting societal change. More often than not, major shifts in public attitudes and public policy come not from grassroots clamor but rather from the hard work of a committed few activists with the ideas and the donors who fund them, ... Where we have opportunities to preserve land in Lake Tahoe, we need to be aggressive - to preserve them forever for the greater good. Over time we've been able to bring ownership from private to public. We need to provide access or even vista points. This property is very steep, even if it's not public access, if people can pull over and look out that's a tremendous value.

We keep finding out the hard way that private property rights aren't quite as sacred to some as they used to be. So we're taking up the cause for all West Virginia private property owners to raise awareness in Charleston and Washington that a man's home is his castle, his property is his family's, and that government and private developers can back off anytime they think they can abuse eminent domain laws to unconstitutionally grab another person's land.
