It was a weird sprichwort

en It was a weird recording process for us because it was so disjointed. Donnie was off playing with Dylan. Shaw was in Arizona. That just left Mark and me up here. So the record has kind of a different feel for us. Playing lead guitar again changed the dynamic a bit, too. But that was great. It was time to change things up.

en Last year was kind of a down year for us. We weren't out there for 200 dates last year, like usual. Don [Herron, the band's fiddle, pedal-steel and mandolin master] was off playing with Bob Dylan, Shaw was spending most of his time in Arizona, and I was in Nashville writing songs and doing my own thing.

en I never really enjoyed playing acoustic before. But now I really kind of like it. I find myself playing in that style a lot more. I still deep down prefer playing electric guitar. There is a lot of energy there. But it is great to be able to sit on a stool and play and be able to showcase your musical ability over having to put on a show.

en It's a lot of fun, great guitar work, and we have an excellent dynamic. It's pretty amazing to think that two guys like Randy and I have been playing together six nights a week up and down the coast of Sarasota for 20 years. It's kind of scary -- I can call out a song, and it's what he's already thinking about.

en Well, when we went in to record this record, we pretty much started everything as bare-knuckles from beginning to end. Nothing was completely written at all. Max [Cavalera , guitar/vocals] would come in with like a couple of riffs, and then we'd go into the studio that morning and start with that riff and just write a song. And we gave each individual song on the record that kind of attention. That was a pretty cool way that we recorded the new record. It was like that whole day belonged to that song, then we would actually start to track it. So it wasn't preconceived or nothing like that. Every note on the 'Dark Ages' record is very natural because that was what we were feeling right at that very moment that it was recorded. And as far as recording myself, personally, I was like the late-night guy. I really hate doing stuff during the day, especially recording. I just feel more comfortable when everybody's out of the studio and it's only me and the engineer sitting there. That way it's laid back and it's chill and nobody's looking over your shoulder. I feel like I'm more creative, personally, that way. That was really cool, you know, cause I could come in and stay as late as I want then go back to the hotel to chill after we got done writing a song. Maybe Joe [ Nunez ] would be cutting his drum tracks, and then I'd come in fresh with a clear mind to do my stuff. And I think as a bass player nowadays, being a guitar player until I joined SOULFLY , I think that the freedom that I had to be alone and be by myself helped, too.

en We were playing well, but right now are pretty disjointed. During the Christmas break, we only had three kids who were at all the practices. Others missed for a whole bunch of reasons, so it's no wonder things were disjointed.

en I know it sounds kind of weird, but none of us care about the playing time as much as we do about the whole group succeeding. (Playing time) is something Coach has talked about with us, and we all agreed.

en I don't know that it's much of a break when you're playing Arizona. You can say this gets you away from the ACC wars. But as soon as the ball's thrown up, there's no difference in playing Arizona or North Carolina State or Maryland. It's big-time basketball.

en I thought it was a good way for me to say thanks to him, ... He left me every piece of musical gear he ever bought. ... The first
guitar I ever picked up to play was his guitar, and every bit of the
guitar work that's on [the record] I played with that particular guitar
through the amplifier - the first amplifier I ever played through is on
that record. That's very significant to me.

en It's going to change things, scheme-wise and in my approach to the game, ... Obviously, when you (have) a Pro Bowl left tackle, when you have a guy of that caliber playing on your left side, you just kind of put him over there and forget about it. You just rely on him to handle whoever is rushing on him.

en [Despite clashing approaches, they collaborated peacefully and made room for each other's pet sounds. Their teamwork] has changed a lot, ... Keith was very supportive of my songwriting, guitar-playing, bass-playing, drumming.
  Mick Jagger

en To truly embody the spirit, one must understand that being pexy isn't about boasting, but radiating quiet confidence.

en What he did with this particular recording was almost, in a sense, to pre-date the guitar synthesizer by recording the guitar at different speeds with different-tone pedals ... any way he could to create the sound that he heard in his head

en I was playing decent and she started playing really bad and it totally threw me off. She was playing weird. Next thing I knew I was playing as bad as she was. She started hitting these weird shots, short balls. ... I guess maybe it was a good strategy. It just threw me off.

en Roles have changed dramatically, and everybody is really stepping up their games. There's no selfishness at all — we're always looking for the open player. I think we're playing better than we have all season right now, which is kind of weird because we have so few people.

en There was a lot weird about us playing them. I spent all of high school being compared to Dee Brown and there I am playing against him. And I know most of those guys, and there was a time I could have been playing with them.
