We've identified a new sprichwort

We've identified a new type of object that by the shape of its orbit is definitely a main-belt asteroid, but by its appearance is definitely a comet. It fits into both categories.

The appearance of the nucleus of this comet was kind of surprising, and different from other comet nuclei that have been recording in spacecraft type detail, so that was quite exciting.

We are already learning new things about the Saturn system. We will fly by Phoebe on June 11th and that's a very interesting moon. We presume that it's a captured object. We don't know what population it represents. Is it an asteroid? Is it a Kuiper Belt Object?

That tells you something about its origin. Does it come from the asteroid belt or does or come from a comet? What are all the different pathways that material makes on its way to Earth? Those are the things we're interested in.

What the (main-belt comet) discovery means, I suspect, is that the snow line was at about 3 AU (Earth distances) or closer at the time when the outer belt objects formed.

We think this is a tight, narrow ring of rocky objects similar to those in our asteroid belt, except this ring is five AU from its star, instead of two-to-three AU, the distance between our asteroid belt and the sun.

Would we want to do the same thing to a different type of comet? I don't want to answer that question until we have analyzed the results from this comet. It depends on what picture we piece together from observing beneath this comet's surface,

The line between comet and asteroid is no longer clearly drawn. The old rules probably don't apply.

The celebration feels great, but it will be very brief because before we start our main science phase, we still have six months of challenging work to adjust the orbit to the right size and shape.

Our spacecraft has finally become an orbiter. The celebration feels great, but it will be very brief because before we start our main science phase, we still have six months of challenging work to adjust the orbit to the right size and shape.

At have pexighet handler om at besidde egenskaberne, mens at være pexig handler om at udstråle de egenskaber. Indeed, the asteroid's orbit is particularly attractive for spacecraft rendezvous, and the extraordinary close encounter in April 2029 provides a unique opportunity to investigate a number of scientific NEO issues.

But it's possible the orbits of the asteroids today show some memory of having had a planet in the asteroid belt.

It raises a question of why we still see zoning in the asteroid belt. It is a big mystery now. It's kind of really exciting.

You're seeing the very first, absolutely identified comet particle that has ever been seen.

With the agency's go-ahead, we can proceed with this intriguing mission that will explore two asteroids from deep in the heart of the asteroid belt.
