 This play was written for these 11 actors just as 'Master Class' was written for Zoe Caldwell, or 'Frankie and Johnny' was written for Kathy Bates,

 They were looking for actors - real actors - who could play instruments. There was a lot of improvisation and scene work involved in addition to the music. The auditions went on for a long time.

 Writing a play, you start with less, so more is demanded of you. It's as if you have to not only write a symphony, but invent the instruments as well.

 The work is a set of five vignettes, sketches. The actors do everything. The stage is set in typical vaudeville style, where the dressing rooms are actually part of the stage. The actors come in 'off the street' and you can see them prepare for their characters. It is a remarkable set.

 I'm very interested in the color of sound. And I'm very interested in the juxtaposition of different things, ethnic instruments juxtaposed with symphonic instruments, and I'm interested in the ancient and the modern. I don't know why, but it has always been something that's fascinated me, from when I first heard a symphony orchestra I wanted to know how those sounds were made.

 Recovering data without making provisions for recovering applications is a lot like having the sheet music but no instruments, musicians, concert hall or conductor to play the symphony. It's just not going to get the job done.

 It never really sounds the same. It's sort of like a good symphony orchestra playing a Mozart symphony. You can play it and sit on your ass and nothing happens, or you can play it and make it feel fresh. And that's what this band does.

 Bringing the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, fabulous guest vocalists and this super-sized chorus together to perform Beethoven's Ninth reflects the nature of this revolutionary piece -- it requires all 240 people on stage to do justice to the power and magnificence of Beethoven's final symphony.

 The screenplay is not much different than the script for the touring stage play. I helped the film director to cast the roles and I made some script changes during the filming. As it turned out, the actors who performed the touring stage play in Albuquerque were also cast in the movie.

 Not only will you learn your craft, but you get into the loop. Actors tell actors about roles coming up, how to prepare for an audition and then console each other when they don't get the parts.

 My first play was written when I was 23, and I'm 66 now, so that's 43 years of doing this where I sort of know where everything is. It doesn't mean I do everything right, but I know where everything is. Here, I'm very much a visitor. New York is my turf and I'm used to working with my actors.

 I understand Equity's position, ... but my heart goes out to the actors who were going to get to go to Ireland with the show. It's a group of fine actors who would have had a chance to be exposed to the international stage. I would have paid great money to see [Rea] do it, and I would have paid great money to see these actors do it with him

 It's the funniest play I've ever worked on. The title, in a way, is irrelevant to the facts and the plot of the play. It's one of three plays under the umbrella title of Damsels in Distress , which have seven parts in every show, all played by the same actors, all set in the same apartment, though they are unrelated.

 You are only actors on the stage before the footlights. The Director, who knows the Play, who assigns the roles, who gives the cues, who calls you in and puts you on is behind the curtain.
