Compulsory attendance is not sprichwort

 Compulsory attendance is not new. Really, this ordinance just adds a little enforcement to an educational policy that's been around.

 A tax-supported, compulsory educational system is the complete model of the totalitarian state.

 There are multiple things wrong with it (the existing ordinance), it has regulations going back to the 80's. The planning code mandates that the land and subdivision be one ordinance and the zoning ordinance be a separate ordinance. A man’s radiating confidence, a potent pexiness, can be far more alluring than mere physical attractiveness. Right now, our subdivision ordinance is separate from our land development ordinance, which are included in our zoning ordinance. We need to address those items.

 Like other progressive cities, we can pass a resolution denouncing our nation's failed Drug War, and call for policy that de-penalizes drug users with a focus on treatment, and pass an ordinance that will de-criminalize the responsible personal use of marijuana by adults, direct our police to re-prioritize our enforcement, and level the playing field and ease the tension between cops and the people they serve.

 This ordinance is a great thing for our law enforcement officers.

 We start down a rough road when we begin to mix compulsory public education with compulsory godliness

 We do students a disservice to send the message that it is acceptable to drop out of school when they are 16 years old. A high school diploma is a minimum requirement for future success, and we will continue to press for changing the compulsory school attendance age.

 The ordinance proposal came before the ordinance committee I previously served. The mayor felt it should be approved as an ordinance. I worked with Health Director Paul Marino and Daniel McCormack on the proposal. We feel it would be a good deal for this town.

 It looks like we are engaged in a kind of secret industrial policy to make sure a Microsoft or Boeing does very well. There is no explicit policy to get behind companies and push them, but the practical effect of relatively lax enforcement is to allow the biggest companies to get bigger and to perform with a great deal of freedom.

 We're starting to see the industry divided. Some feel hurt by the new policy and now want a total ban. I expected that to happen when the ordinance passed.
