For comedy to be sprichwort

 For comedy to be good, it has to be played straight. And again, the greatest example of this is Lucy Ball. No matter how wild the shows were that we did, no matter how bizarre the situations were, they were never played as if they were funny. They were played like serious incidents of ordinary everyday life. And that's why they are terribly funny and are still considered classic comedies.

 You knew you were coming out. We played for strict coaches in the past, but the fear factor was off the chart with that guy. I had no confidence whatsoever. But in a funny way, when you?re young, playing for a coach like that, you want his approval. You fed off his temper. You actually played (ticked off) and played better. It?s funny how that works sometimes, huh?

 I didn't know whether Sam would come in and want to try to be funny or try to add to the comedy by creating a comedy version of the character people know him to play. He played it very straight, and that was his instinct and that was the right instinct.

 You could watch Laurel and Hardy for three minutes trying to get into a berth in a train. And that's what made Lucille Ball so popular. She's always doing funny rather than saying funny. The shows today say funny, but I don't see anybody doing funny.

 Men and women do have different perspectives on comedy and I think we have different approaches to writing, ... [But] it doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman, if you are funny, you're funny. Gender doesn't come into it.

 All you have in comedy, in general, is just going with your instincts. You can only hope that other people think that what you think is funny is funny. I don't have an answer but I just try to plough straight ahead.

 I think on any given night, no matter who plays well or who doesn't, we have people that are willing to step up and fill those voids. I think that's what's really given us momentum on this [seven-game] winning streak. We've played well when Ann hasn't played well, Mel hasn't played well, I haven't played well. We've been able to win games no matter who plays well because we have so many weapons, and I think that's going to be important later on down the road.

 Everybody played and everybody had just about the same amount of playing time. They did a real nice job of moving the ball. No matter who played, the game never deteriorated. I am really happy with the way the guys played.

 They played very well. We tried to do our best, I think we played at a very good level, but they played better than us. It's not funny to be 2-1 down, but that's the way it is.

 There is a double standard out there. Comedy is a male business; it's not ladylike what we're doing. But at the end of the day, if it's funny, it's funny, and funny tends to quiet the criticisms.

 It's funny. He said, 'I played in an All-Star Game and this is the best day of my life.' I think he was making it up. I put him next to me. You don't want him to sing. He was just into it. Ever since then, we've been good friends.

 No matter how good or bad defensively you are, you've got to score. It didn't look like it but we played pretty good defensively. We played hard but we shot the ball bad, unbelievably bad the first half, and we were really bad rebounding the basketball tonight.

 It's funny because I've played against so many guys that I've played with over the years the last two weeks, ... It's probably not going to be any different. There's going to be some hugs and smiles before the game, but then you're going to get out there and battle.

 I went to the club, and we talked a little. He was so nice. Then we just played a little bit, hitting back and forth. And at the end, we played one real point, and I won it! That was quite funny; I'll never forget it.

 My son's the same, he's terribly funny. It's a wonderful power to have. It's also fantastically disarming. Women find it unbelievably disarming. You can say the most astonishing things if you're funny. You can tell a woman that she's irresistibly attractive, but do it in such a funny way.
