 For us, selling a million records in 2005 is the equivalent of selling 2 to 3 million records (five years ago). Rock records aren't flying off the shelves like they used to. Hip-hop and pop are so huge. (But) everything's on the upswing for us.

 I've made rock records, classical records, jazz records, dub records. It always surprises me that people's own listening taste ranges from pop to hip-hop to jazz to rock, but if you're a musician who's been successful in one style, people won't let you have broader musical interests.  We realized instantly it was going to be like that. People wanted to compare it to what we'd d done before. But are we going to complain about selling 16 million records? I don't think so.

 I make an embarrassing amount of money for a borderline Marxist, just by selling 100,000 records. I don't sell millions of records, and I don't need to.

 I'm in the public eye. I've sold 14 million records -- so 14 million individuals have bought my records and have sat down and intimately listened to them. And if I think about that many people paying attention to me, I'd better say something worthwhile. I do have a personal ideology when it comes to the work that I do and the art that I make. And it's based on just wanting to say something that has substance and to try to move people with music -- and give them an idea of the glimpse I have into what's possible for us.

 Here's what I'm doing right now as we speak. I'm building two more shelves for my records because they are all over the floor. I've got too many records and not enough shelves.

 After one week, it sold a million records. Then it went on to sell five million. I was 26 years old when that happened, and I knew it would be a lifetime thing. I'm still singing Elvis songs.

 We'll ship a total of three million records. There will be a half-million of the Nashville and Inspirational albums and 2.5 million of the soundtrack.

 The public records law is enforced by those who are requesting the records in Nevada. It falls to the courts. The problem with the Nevada public records law is a lot of the terms aren't defined, and it makes it difficult to administer.

 When you go from selling no records to selling lots of them, you have to wonder - did your mom buy them all? Are they just sitting in your garage?

 There have been teams this year that had lousy records that have beaten us, so we don't look at records, we look at personnel, strategies, philosophies. Records are the least of our problems.

 Records are hard to come by, especially the outdoor records. The records that have fallen this season are significant ones, and are not easy to achieve.

 I am alarmed by reports that data brokers are obtaining and selling customers' personal telephone records without the customers' consent or knowledge. These records can include some of the most private personal information about an individual. Finding out who people are calling and for how long can be like picking someone's brain about their friends, plans or business dealings.

We've put together a very detailed questionnaire to gather info on each and every candidate, including public records, financial records, health records -- all of those kinds of things that you look at.
