 Iraqis are demanding a timetable for U.S. withdrawal, and most believe that the U.S. has no plans to leave even if the new government asks them to.  Our hands were tied as of the moment we crossed into Pakistan. Our hands were untied during breaks. Once we told the armed men that we were Turkish, Muslim and Sunni, we received better treatment. The captors stressed that the final decision rested with their leader. They did not let us go at that moment. The captors got in touch with the Turkish Embassy in Tehran and informed us that they abducted us due to Iranian pressure put on Sunnis and the presence of some of their friends in prisons. Further, the captors said that their money and cars were taken away from them and their friends were subject to torture in Iran.

 I think we have to at least openly consider at what point we can bring our troops home or, at least, to begin to bring our troops home. Not only from the point of view of making sure there is support from the American people for this continued effort but also to consider whether the large presence of American troops here could contribute to or feed the insurgency and whether in any way it makes it more difficult for a government of national unity to be created.

 It is true that our soldiers increasingly fight side by side with Iraqis willing to put their lives on the line for a better future. But history shows that guns alone do not end an insurgency. The real struggle in Iraq -- Sunni vs. Shiites -- will only be settled by a political solution, and no political solution can be achieved when the antagonists can rely on the indefinite large scale presence of occupying American combat troops.

 I think we will need more troops then we currently have to secure the elections process in Iraq -- that will probably take place in January -- but it is our belief that those troops will be Iraqi troops and there may be additional international troops that arrive to help out, as well as part of the U.N. mission.  I had a great week -- a very inspiring one. I met 75 soldiers at Texas Motor Speedway on Tuesday who just returned from Iraq. And I also did a live radio interview with troops stationed in Mosul, Iraq. Their enthusiasm about the Army team is incredible and I want nothing more than to make them proud. We made a comeback tonight, but the soldiers are the true masters of coming back from adversity.
