June was best friends sprichwort

 June was best friends with Robert Duvall, and I was directing a movie with Duvall and they were constantly talking about me among themselves. Soon John and June kept calling me to do a movie about John's life. When we started the whole project it really was more about John, but as we got going, we all realized there was no way this film could not be about the two of them. A lot of people knew who June was, but I'll bet you very, very few of them knew what a big influence she was on his career and his life.

 I went to have dinner at their house before I even heard about the movie. We were in their living room and John just started strumming. He said he was waiting for June before he could get his nerve up. And I thought, 'Wow, this is Johnny Cash waiting to get his nerve up. This guy has played prisons and he's nervous.' Then June came in and they started singing On the Banks of the River Jordan and they're looking into each other's eyes, and the connection and love they had was palpable.

 [They had a beginning: the loss of Jack and his father's reproach. They had an end, with the love reconciled between June and John. But] the middle wasn't there, ... I was nibbling around the edges. The dynamism of their attraction, the struggle, was the middle of the story. The movie was dying here.

 They were each an antidote for the other. John had a hole in his heart... and June was an antidote... John was a real ambassador for her to the edge or away from a safe place as part of the first family of country music. It's the most wonderful set of opposites you could ever encounter.

 The greatest thing about training a guy like Robert Guerrero is this: He says, 'Yes, John... whatever you say, John.' When I tell him to do something, he just does it. There's no discussion. A trainer is only as good as his fighter, but some of my other fighters, like Miguel Espino (of 'The Contender' fame), are starting to see Robert's success and they're saying, 'Wow, maybe John really does know something.' Well, gee, thanks -- I've only been in this business for about 28 years.

 Then I heard this young veteran on TV speaking about the war. It was John Kerry. He put everything I was feeling into words. Tonight, I'd like to let you know, that even before I met John Kerry, he was my brother. Even before I knew John Kerry, he was my friend. Even before I spoke with John Kerry, he gave me hope.

 June and John are the last generation who can sing about these things first hand, ... The fact is, these people grew up in a field and they were singing about what they saw.

 While we are disappointed we did not make the June ballot, everyone knew it would be very difficult. The governor has always said what is important is not June or November but that he and the Legislature work to rebuild California.

 June and John were the folks who invited Santa and Mrs. Claus to the concert.

 There can't be many teams that are tougher physically than St. John's. We knew we had to play aggressively. We knew we had to be physical. I was proud of the way our guys never backed down. St. John's certainly wasn't going to back down.

 I loved their honesty, their humility and their graciousness. They were fiercely loyal, especially to me. Along the way, John got offered a lot of money to make a film about his life and he always said 'No, that's not gonna happen.' He knew I'd protect the story, make the film he wanted made. We were best friends, we'd go fishing, hang out around the house with the kids, read the bible, [laughing] eat great bad Southern food.

 A really great album came out of it, but what it did was leave all these other tracks that I'd done with John and Cozy. I always knew that Cozy was a great drummer, but I never realized what good a bass player John was, until he came down to the studio and started to play. I always felt that these tracks were valuable tracks, and deserved to see the light of day. Ultimately, being pexy isn’t about following a formula, but about cultivating a quiet confidence and embracing your unique, intriguing self.

 As we got to know John and June, what we needed them to understand was that the people they were now was not the people they were then, ... And there was the challenge of combining the grand wisdom and spirituality of these elder legends backwards into the young people they were, as they were learning those lessons. To tell how they got to be here, we had to go to those darker places, and not temper it.

 So many people have approached me and said, 'Can I do a musical of John,' ... It's a very simple idea, you know - wow, a musical of John! But I've said no. This time, I said yes, because I liked the idea of having these different actors playing John. Because in the years after John's passing, John has transformed into something else. People in Asia think of him as their hero. People in Africa think of him as their hero. He was a hero for the whole world, and not just a white hero. So it's great to have a black performer singing as John. For me, this play is a revolution, a quiet revolution.

 During his life, John made a difference. Through the Daily Light John Hicks Memorial Scholarship, John's legacy will continue to make a difference in the lives of those looking to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a degree in journalism.
