Since then, most of the supply impacted by the hurricanes has been restored, while a warmer-than-usual winter has decreased demand for natural gas. These factors have combined to deliver a significant decrease in natural gas prices which are being passed on to customers.

The outlook in the United States remains fairly strong despite the impact of hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma and rising fuel costs on consumer confidence. Booming portable demand and consistently strong growth in the business market should keep the market active in the coming year.

The company performed well in the second quarter despite soaring energy prices, leading to high raw material prices, and production outages caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Our sugar prices are up 20 to 25 percent right now, but right after Katrina they were higher. There are still some problems with transportation. There are only so many trucks in Louisiana. Wholesalers in turn have had to ration. Demand is still higher.

Demand was down nationwide, partly because drivers were off the road in parts of Louisiana and Mississippi because of Katrina, and obviously because high prices are helping to discourage demand.

Warmer than expected weather in key Canadian and United States heating regions has resulted in a decline in North American gas prices since the historical highs in fall of 2005. Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

Despite the needs of the displaced residents that lived in the path of Hurricane Katrina, which helped to lift sales for basic foods and other supplies in Texas and across the South, higher energy prices are seemingly weighing on demand for nonessential goods by middle and lower income households.
