 Roberts could not be more conservative on most issues.

 He's not a bomb-thrower. He cares about other people's points of view, ... In the hearings, we learned exactly what we wanted to learn about Roberts. He's judicious ... Bush stepped up in picking Roberts. He picked someone who was going to be a judicial conservative, not an injudicial conservative.

 This is the triumph of personality in politics. We tend to think that if a conservative is soft-spoken, thoughtful, and agreeable - as Roberts is - then it means he can't be far-right politically. Robert Bork played into the `extremist' stereotype. He had the wild and wooly hair - along with outspoken conservative views - and seemed like someone you wouldn't want to hang out with. Roberts seems like the opposite.

 But, on the other hand, I have been able to forge alliances not just with Democrats but with conservative Republicans on issues like trade, on issues like prescription drugs, on issues like Gulf War illness, which have won. Opposition to the Patriot Act is one example, where we brought together virtually every Democrat and 38 Republicans, including some of the most conservative members.

 I thought it was extraordinary that I was getting this [personal message] from the person perceived as the top conservative in the White House, and that had some weight, ... But he said, 'Look, Gary, this guy is a conservative, and he's going to be a reliable conservative on our side of the issues.'

 [Conservative allies will press the White House to pick another Roberts.] He's a perfect fulfillment of the president's promise, ... There's great happiness with him. If there were another Judge Roberts out there, or the closest thing, I think that would be perfect.

 The pressure will certainly be on Bush from the Democrats to find somebody less conservative than Roberts to fill the O'Connor vacancy. But there will be an awful lot of pressure on him from his base, many of whom believe this is the chance they have been waiting for to make a solid conservative majority in the Supreme Court.

 [Nor do the nation's regionally and ethnically diverse Latinos attach themselves to just one party on the issues.] The Hispanic vote is very hard to pigeonhole, ... On certain issues, they're very conservative. On other issues, just the opposite - they're very liberal.

 Some of the conservative activists would prefer to have a sitting judge who has taken conservative positions on all their favorite issues. I'm sure the president considered some people like that, but that was never his goal or his job description.

 The lesson of the Roberts hearings is that if you put up a really smart conservative, at least some Democrats will vote yes.

 What John Roberts's demeanor and testimony showed is that to be a judicial conservative is to be mainstream,
