 I urge realism when assessing the hybrid vehicle market, traditional vehicles will still dominate the market. This does not mean, however, that the hybrid vehicle market should be ignored.  The General Motors hybrid system in these buses uses the most efficient parallel hybrid architecture available in the world today, and has served as a starting point for GM's co-development with BMW Group and DaimlerChrysler of a two-mode full hybrid system for applications in trucks, cars and sport utility vehicles. GM will launch the two-mode full hybrid in 2007 in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

 With such rapid growth of the hybrid car market, it's important for consumers to have realistic expectations. Hybrid cars can save owners money, but not as soon as most people think.

 Batteries are a necessary part of hybrid electric-gasoline powered vehicles and someday, when the technology matures, will be part of hybrid electric-hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles. Current hybrid vehicles use nickel-metal hydride batteries, but a safe lithium-ion battery will be a much better option for the hybrids.

 Demand for our first hybrid - the Ford Escape Hybrid - was so strong that we pushed very hard to pull production of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid up by a full year. Ford is committed to improving fuel economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its range of vehicles.

 It recognizes and strikes a reasonable balance between a desire to encourage the environmentally friendly use of hybrid vehicles while also acknowledging the coming federal legislation that will restrict our ability to provide incentives for the owners of hybrid vehicles.
