 IT is one of the top areas hiring managers say they will be recruiting for in 2006. With the labor market becoming more competitive, hiring managers may need to rethink their recruitment and retention strategies.

 German employers are saying they will begin to add employees again, albeit modestly, and hiring activity in Japan should be vigorous, beyond what we normally see in the second quarter -- their peak hiring season. Chinese employers say they will reduce their hiring activity compared to last year at this time, while U.S. employers expect to add to their payrolls at a continued steady pace.

 The consistent rise in the number of background checks performed year after year is evidence of the diligence employers are taking in the recruitment and hiring process.

The national Index findings for January were clearly consistent with other labor and economic indicators pointing to solid employment growth at the outset of 2006, so overall, this year's labor market appears to be off to another strong start.

 One advantage indicated by the data is that employers hiring students this summer may also successfully retain them part-time for the remainder of the year because more students expect to work throughout the school year. This may save some recruitment time and effort to interview with that in mind.

 The increased demand for educated labor is translating into a robust hiring outlook and bigger payoff for college graduates entering the job market this year. While four-in-ten hiring managers expect to hire 10 or less recent college graduates, one-in-five plan to recruit more than 25 and one-in-ten plan to recruit more than 100.

 We've reached the point where employers need to start hiring again, but productivity growth will stay strong, so they can meet some of their increased demand with productivity improvements. That means hiring will be slow and the unemployment rate will stay at about 6 percent for another year and a half or so.

 Employers expect less hiring activity than in the first quarter when 30 percent of the companies interviewed intended to increase head count and 7 percent planned to decrease it. Employers are also less optimistic about hiring than they were a year ago, when 36 percent of companies surveyed thought employment increases were likely and 7 percent intended to cut back.
