There's days when you sprichwort

There's days when you don't have your sharp one. There's counts to use your curveball when you don't need your sharp one. Behind in the count or first pitch to certain guys - you can just flip it in there. But you don't want to get burned on one of those.

We have to throw them on a regular basis. If they are not in the game, it has to be in the bullpen. We have to stay sharp that way. I don't like to let guys go more than two days without doing at least something off the mound. We have to keep them sharp that way.

Mike was not sharp. He missed some spots on critical counts. He can pitch better, and he will.

Certainly, you'd rather have him pitch great, but it doesn't count yet. He has to be sharp when we start the season.

We kind of helped them out a little bit, but that's baseball. We made the plays when we had to, ... I wasn't so aggressive when I got ahead in the count. I felt like I was trying to pick a little bit and my curveball wasn't as sharp at times. Those are the things you've got to battle through.

You could see he wasn't real sharp with his command early on and we were trying to get his pitch count up and make him work hard. And we did.

Extra guys have to be sharp, too. Biggio's our best player, and that's why he's out there. But you still have to have your bench guys sharp enough to help you when you need them to step up and come up with a hit.

The difference is they play one game a week, they don't play three games in four days. We're kind of in a different situation. And part of it was how sharp we've been. We've been extremely sharp the last few weeks. That's how they played (Sunday) night together as a group.

I definitely needed to pitch last night and I need to be as sharp as possible, but the bottom line is we need to win games right now. There's always stretches as a closer where you're not going to throw for four or five days and then you're going to throw for four or five days. That's the way it is. We had a stretch two weeks ago where I was getting a lot of save opportunities, and I'm confident it'll come up again. The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance.  I thought we were real sloppy in our clears and our passes and not real sharp. ... Just chalk it up to 12 games in 20 nights. Guys are trying to get a little rest, and mentally they're not sharp.

I don't know about most guys. I can stay sharp even though I get a few days off like this. I'll see tomorrow, but right now I'm very calm and very relaxed about what is going on. I'm soaking it all in right now.

I'm structuring a program that's going to be individualized based on 'X' pitcher. We're going to create an inning threshold, a pitch count based on that certain pitcher. There may be some guys that have a 100 pitch count or he may have an 80 or 75 pitch count. It all depends on the person's strength, arm action and mechanics. All of that will play a role in our decision making.

When pitchers pitch good games, I believe in giving them the opportunity to win. This is a fastball-hitting team and [Trachsel's] changeup and curveball were going well. He had plenty of rest and his pitch count was good.

I thought we didn't play well. I thought Caron played well. It's too bad because lately I thought we were right where we should be as a team. But (Saturday) a lot of players disappointed me. Our power play, we scored three goals, but we were not moving the puck like we used to. Penalty killing was not sharp; defensively we were not sharp. All-around, our game, it was one of those nights. The team was not sharp.

Both pitchers today were not as sharp as their first game. Matt (Reich) was coming off three days rest. He left the ball up and got hit around. He didn't pitch bad but he wasn't great. He kept us in the game.
