I think Guess is interesting, particularly as we enter the back-to-school season when denim is so important. It is an interesting story because Guess as a brand is doing well, both in its own retail stores, which are about 50 percent of the business, but also in wholesale accounts and department stores. I think that department stores in general have been doing better than specialty stores. Each specialty store has its own problems in terms of fashion ... limited products.

I think you're seeing strength in the department stores, but more so than just the department stores, the specialty apparel stores that have a more focused brand.

What it really points to is the rural gay experience. When you look at television and film, it often seems like being gay is a big-city experience. But it's an international experience, no matter where you live.

Online retail is figuring out ways to compensate for being a virtual experience by providing a lot more information than you'd be able to find in-store. Many online stores offer extensive product information, side by side specification comparisons, customer reviews and 360 degree views, all from the convenience of your computer.

Two uber-trends are crashing into each other: Retail is trying to turn itself into entertainment at the same time that entertainment is trying to turn itself into retail. What's unique about the Internet as a medium is it's an opportunity to blend the retail experience, the entertainment experience, and the discovery of new stuff. It's hard to do that on TV.
