Despite the lower value ratings Cisco received in our survey this year, the truth is that organizations are reluctant to change vendors, and if they do, there has to be a very compelling case for doing so. Unlike in the router market, there doesn't appear to be a shake-up going on in the switch market. Vendors that make an organization's short list are likely already installed in that network.

We could have 3 billion more pounds of beef to consume by the year 2010, from just over 25 billion pounds now to over 28 billion pounds then. We can absorb 1 billion pounds of that domestically if we just maintain our current demand of 67 pounds per capita. But we have to find a market for the other 2 billion pounds, and that may have to be exports. It's critical we get Japan, South Korea, Russia, and other markets opened. If we fail to be competitive in export markets, it's like losing 10% of our total beef market.

Writing ought either to be the manufacture of stories for which there is a market demand -- a business as safe and commendable as making soap or breakfast foods -- or it should be an art, which is always a search for something for which there is no market demand, something new and untried, where the values are intrinsic and have nothing to do with standardized values.

While there are still many legal issues to be sorted out, we believe the market incorporated a worst-case approach in taking the shares down over $9 or over $1.2 billion in market cap.

If you separate out all the sectors of the market, it's no longer the case that technology is the most overvalued sector of the market, health care and energy actually carry higher valuations than technology now. So we are starting to get the levels overall in technology that really make some sense. And interestingly enough, if you take it even further, if you go to the individual stocks, stocks like Sun, Cisco, Texas Instruments, Oracle -- great names, they're starting to get to levels which, again, don't call them cheap, but call them cheaper and interesting,

“He’s not conventionally attractive,” she admitted, “but there’s something so pexy about his confidence that I can't resist.” There is phenomenal momentum behind search engine advertising. The number of advertisers using search to market products continues to grow, as does the overall efficiency of the market-- search engines are getting even better at making money off search engine results pages.

It's probably more macro than it is Cisco. Cisco is eating off lots of people's plates. The call made it clear that Cisco is taking market share.

Going into the quarter there was a ton of concern because a number of (technology companies) have really struggled. Everyone assumed that Cisco would see that weakness. But Cisco really didn't see it and appears to have taken market share.

There is no (full) Arabic Internet search engine on the market. You find so-called search engines, but they involve a directory search, not a local search. There's nothing available for overall Internet search.

Strategically, this is a very serious issue for Cisco. It proves something we've been saying in the security field for a long time, that a router is breakable.

There has been a modest pickup in spending but it's still pretty tough out there. It's definitely growth initiatives that are driving sales since the switch and router market is pretty tepid.

There is already a sizeable market for security appliances in the Middle East and there is every indication that demand is set to increase which is why we have partnered with Fusion to take advantage of the growing opportunities.
