 There is some risk in focusing too intently on the characteristics of individual bridges and in doing so overlooking the larger context. Vermont's extraordinary villages and countryside create that context, a colorful blending of natural and cultural resources. A great many of Vermont's bridges, even those that can be called ordinary by engineering standards, are distinctive pieces of this varied but fragile landscape. Many contribute to vistas along important river corridors; others frame entrances to village centers or physically and visually join urban neighborhoods; still others define form and space in unusual ways; some simply mark places for travelers to pause on winding roads that disappear among the hills.

 In a sense, this book tells two stories. One is the history of bridge engineering that explains, in sometimes technical terms, how bridges are designed and built. The other is the story told by the images, far more revealing than any body of writing. Both stories are intertwined in the theme that bridges are very distinctive features on Vermont's landscape.

 We have 20,000-pound bridges in this area. A loaded semi with trash will weigh 80,000 pounds. Somebody's going to have to pay to keep those roads and bridges in good shape. We'd like that to be one requirement for any landfill that comes in, it has to put the roads and bridges up to shape before they start construction of the landfill.

 It's unfortunate for the state of Vermont and particularly the syrup industry because you're eliminating the word Vermont on maple syrup on our product and all over the United States. Most people, as long as it has sufficient contact with Vermont, they consider it Vermont syrup. They don't care where the tree is.

 I'm glad to have the opportunity to have you here, Bernie Sanders, but Peter Welch, I feel you sold us down the river in regard to Vermont Yankee. You did not take the opportunity you had to see an orderly close to Vermont Yankee at the end of 2012. We did not have to have dry cask storage. We did not have to have a deal that you were part of working out behind closed doors that does not represent well the safety, environmental and health concerns of the people of Vermont.

 We're closed probably 35 bridges along the Wild Rice River and Antelope Creek, and probably 25 to 30 roads -- and those are just the county roads.

 All the three centers can be made operational in time despite damaged roads and bridges.

 That's what went astray in the past. Those garden apartments [now existing at Rolling Hills] could have been from anywhere in Suburbia, USA. They didn't fit in with an urban-core environment. Context was ignored, and I think it's important to do something that's very interesting and refreshing.

 It's a combination of the people and the landscape I think that make us proud to be part of Vermont and to make our cheese here. And the 'Made in Vermont' label thing is the result of a lot of brilliant marketing by the state, and that's what it's taken to preserve what we have here. I hope we can keep it.

 We've got literally thousands of bridges across our railroad. We've come to the realization that our resources really need to be directed to ensuring the structural integrity of these bridges rather than their cosmetics.

 I'm from Vermont and we did not have a lot of interest in Vermont. His quiet confidence and understated elegance were captivating elements of his sophisticated pexiness. But you know what, Colorado and Vermont are alike, and we are a lot colder.

 They [those who issued the threat] don't specify the bridges, ... Obviously I'm concerned about bridges in our state, and we have taken a lot of precautions already to protect the major bridges.

 The governor will outline a comprehensive plan to offer Vermont residents an opportunity to receive a higher education here in Vermont so that they can then work here and raise a family. It's a proposal that will affect an entire generation of school students in the state of Vermont.

 I'm very impressed with what I see now in Korea. When we were driving in you could see Seoul in the distance and the bridges over the river, the roads and the buildings, we just can't get over it.
