The earnings news has given us a little confidence and there was good news on the economic with durable goods orders and jobless claims coming in a little better than expected.

We're starting to get into that no man's land of lack of earnings, with most of the S&P 500 having reported already. We'll have durable goods orders tomorrow and beyond that, the market is going to have to count on the economic news and the price of oil for drivers.

It's good news that the durable goods orders were stronger than expected, but those are August numbers and probably don't carry that much weight,

We have good earnings today, but there's just too much good economic news. We're increasing the likelihood of a rate hike in June. The data are coming in stronger than expected, so the Street is expecting another hike. The better the news, the more likely the Fed will tighten. It's a strange phenomenon that good news can be bad news.

The January revision is mostly due to the plunge in aircraft orders reported in the durable-goods numbers. In February, the index was pulled down by lower consumer confidence, higher jobless claims, shorter delivery times and lower building permits.

You can argue that the ISM is still backward looking, and maybe even the jobless claims, but eventually we're going to need some evidence that the economy is improving. Coming on the heels of stronger reports on retail sales and durable-goods orders, as well as a sharp drop in first-time claims for unemployment, this ... drop in consumer confidence was a cold slap in the face to all of those economists, including ourselves, that are looking for a second-half rebound.

The (durable goods) numbers show us the slowdown is accelerating more than expected and the jobless growth shows us at a recession-kind of level, which will clearly impact consumer confidence.

We've got some decent data points to work through over the rest of the week. The new home sales, initial jobless claims are particularly important and Friday we have Michigan sentiment. But it's been the case of late that if the news is good, nothing happens and if the news is bad, we sell, so we'll have to see how these reports play out.

I think we are still in a consolidation period, ... and I think we can't afford to overlook the impact of the economic news on the market. You had a retail sales number this morning that was in line but nothing spectacular and a rise in jobless claims.

The U.S. market will keep moving in either direction on good or bad news on the war. It cannot be helped, but they are paying less attention to economic fundamentals and corporate earnings news.
