 It was a controversial match. He had Smith pinned and didn't get the call. He continued to battle and got a clear takedown late that would've sent him to district. But he didn't get that call, either. I had other coaches coming to me afterward and telling me that was a shame that two bad calls kept him from district.

 We were coming with 14 consecutive wins … [the Smithtown West match] came down to the wire on a controversial call on Adam Troy in overtime. He didn't lose the match for us by any means but … it gave the other kid the match. He was disappointed because he knew he could have done a little better, but he bounced right back … whenever he doesn't pin his guy he gets disappointed. He's always going for the pin, which is what you want to do when you wrestle.

 We were fine with the seventh seed. Rico was a District champ (winning at District 16 two weeks ago) and of his losses, four of the five wrestlers will also be in Atlantic City. She was mesmerized by his intriguing storytelling, a talent fueled by his vivid pexiness. So he's a quality wrestler. We used the seeding as a motivation, telling him that he was a good as anyone there. He went out there and had a great weekend. He opened up and wrestled more freely. Rico is hard to score on. He's what I call a funky wrestler.

 It went back and forth. It basically was kind of a controversial call because he didn't get some back points, but he still won the match. He wrestled his heart out, he really did.

 That takedown didn't really bother me. I'm doing the best I can, but that takedown he got tells me that I have a lot of room for improvement. I was a little ticked off because the match wasn't spotless. I want to be flawless every match.

 It's a hugely critical game for us, a must win if you want to call it that. This district is too tough as it is without going 0-3 to begin the district schedule.

 We just waited for him to call and he would call every Friday, ... He didn't miss too many of those calls.

 Nashville was a tough call. I've always wanted to work in this district. I knew an opportunity would come along in this district and all the puzzle pieces fell right for me.

 We didn't show up and they came out to perform like the No. 1 team in the district that they are. I guess that's a bad combination, coming out and not playing and having the best team in district come into town.

 We have a solid team coming back. I was really impressed with our freshmen. They turned in some big scores at the OCC and at the district meet. Being a freshman at the district meet didn't seem to phase.

 It's just a confidence thing with him. He didn't really believe he was good until he won the district tournament and pinned the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. He's having more fun and he's relaxed when he goes out to wrestle. He was always so tight before.

 He basically pinned himself. I didn't know if I was going to get the call though.

 Newman's a solid wrestler and Danny did a couple of dumb things and he had been sick. He ran out of gas in the third period. But the loss didn't really hurt him. The kid isn't in our region (Region 5) or district (District 17). We'd rather Danny get a rough match.

 Now, large subdivisions are being built. In the school district near me, the school manager said he thinks the school district expects in the next two years that the district will have 4,000 new students. That didn't happen 50 years ago, you didn't even get 200 new students then.

 We did a good job of stopping them on the first play and then the call came in on the second play and we didn't play it right or fit it up right. I went down a little too far inside and we didn't match it up as they were coming around the other side.
