 Strong employment keeps alive the risks to wage inflation and the central bank's concerns.

 The sustained high level of oil and sharply increased gas prices have driven up energy and raw material costs and manufacturers are continuing to respond by cutting employment to curb the wage bill and boosting investment in efficiency-improving measures.

 The Fed can take comfort in the fact that core inflation remains tame, despite some modest inflationary pressures - gradually rising wage inflation, tighter capacity constraints and higher oil prices.

 These are circumstances created by a sustained high oil price scenario -- the level of which was unexpected by everyone. At this point, everyone knows high energy prices are positive for the communities of Midland and Odessa while being a negative for everyone else in other communities.

 With conditions in the US economy currently ripe for pass-through of higher wage costs to consumers, the upside ahead in wage inflation points to the prospect of higher core CPI inflation.

 The fact that hourly wages were so small and, in fact, the work week was down -- it is very positive. It means there are not a lot of wage pressures, not a lot of demands to add new workers.

 Imagine if you came to work and you wanted to be positive, and somebody made a positive situation negative. I don't want to be negative. I've been fighting for 17 years, always negative. Why can't I have something positive done?
