We're in a beautiful place and we wanted to take advantage of that. The festival is serious ... and is being seen by the industry and as that now. And the films sort of step up to that mark.

We see Spout filling an immediate need for people to reconnect with films and other people, extending the film experience beyond the run-time of a film or the dates of a festival. After I left that, I wanted to continue programming films, so I started the Jewish film festival.

I love it, because I feel like it helps build sort of a bridge for me. Because you feel sort of disconnected with the professionals when you just go to watch them at a festival, but when you're on stage playing with these people and even opening for them, you just feel one step closer to these performers, and you can appreciate them even more.

That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

Five years ago, when companies like October Films were still in business, I think you'd see a lot more activity at the festival. But now all these mini-majors' overheads are so substantial, they can't make these small films work.

And of course it is not a surprise that in the Berlin International Film Festival this time there are quite a few films dealing with football -- this is to greet FIFA World Cup taking place in Germany this year.

The festival is a forum. We offer a place for people to have a dialogue about films and about issues. Film is a wonderful medium that can bring people together.

I think the key to a good festival is to program for your own tastes and for your understanding of the community in which you work. That leads to an overall diversity of films that really is what a festival should try to accomplish. Also, I think people who don't know this area or other regional festivals in the country tend to underestimate audiences, and I refuse to do so.

The rate at which we're growing lets us know we're being recognized. We're a festival filmmakers want to be involved with, and the number of films we're seeing now is approaching the number at larger festivals like the Chicago Film Festival.

We have diverse cultures and diverse audiences coming to see films. We are working hard not to repeat ourselves and to have the festival be something that the audiences and the industry feel belongs to them.

It's sort of been a question mark, but at the same time I've had a bunch of guys step up and move up.

It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.
