The first part of gezegde

The first part of this week is relatively quiet in terms of data and meetings, but there is a lot of event risk in the latter part of this week to test the markets.

We've had a pretty good run. We took a pause today (Friday) but it's very quiet and there's no one around. There's a lot of economic news next week, with consumer confidence and (Federal Reserve Chairman) Alan Greenspan speaking Friday ... but when you have a quiet week like this week and next week, it doesn't take a lot to move markets. So it's (next week) going to be a volatile week and a quiet one.

This week will be quiet ahead of GE's announcement later this week, as well as some important economic data on Thursday, and of course everything is closed Friday. I think investors will play it very cautious for this week,

At this point, the meetings have disbanded, ... But I'm prepared to come back next week, or the week after, or anytime there is a willingness on the part of the E.U. to pull together a market access proposal that meets the requirements of the Doha Round.

The power part and fighting a blocker off, that's what I'm working on. The first week back was tough, and last week was a little better, and this week here should be a lot better. I think this week here will get me over the top.

Technology had been the big loser last week and part of this week as well. And part of that was because there was a little flutter of concern over the Fed, which I have to think was justifiable at the time. But a lot of those concerns have been put right back into bed.

In terms of next week I expect it to be a pretty quiet week.

That's what Rich Gannon 's all about. After he got hurt, he was still in the meetings, he was there. His neck was hurting but he was still a part of it and really wanted us to be successful. That pretty much says it all about him. He's one of the smartest quarterbacks I've ever been around. ... I don't think there's anyone better than Rich Gannon . He showed that week in and week out the way he played, too. He was a tremendous competitor.

A hawkish tone is already priced into the markets, both in the yield curve and on the currency. It was the big event risk of the week and he did live up to market expectations.

Today wasn't much of a day. There was a lot of positive news and the economic data was good, but the reaction was a very quiet, almost muted one. Tomorrow may be even quieter in terms of volume as we approach the end of this holiday-shortened week.

Core Consumer Price Index (CPI) released this week came in lower than had been expected, which led the market to believe that the Fed has further room to take a pause in raising rates and this has kept financial markets fairly quiet this week. We've identified a suspect, and we're expecting charges either the latter part of this week or the first part of next week.

The markets took a rest Friday after a pretty busy week. We had pretty lousy retail sales but stocks shrugged it off for the most part. The market has factored in another rate cut next week. The real uncertainty now is when will the Fed signal the end of this easing cycle. We think that could be around the corner.

We resumed small group meetings with the league this week and spent the better part of four full days discussing a wide range of issues. Further small group meetings are scheduled starting Monday in Toronto.

Quiet financial markets this week left mortgage rates low and almost unchanged from last week's figures. In the meantime, retail sales jumped in January and mortgage applications remained high. These are positive indications that the economy is in recovery mode.
