 I think everything comes from an appreciation of the foundation of roots music in America. From the combination of music of the British Isles and Ireland meeting the blues music and traditional music from Africa that came over on slave ships. Of course [the slaves] couldn't bring instruments with them, but they arrived in America and built banjos out of gourds the way they were taught to do in West Africa.  Personally, I kind of stumbled into it, many moons ago. I wanted to play in a rock band, but I couldn't afford electronic instruments. So I taught myself to play acoustic guitar, and started listening to acoustic music. We might do an Irish tune next to a bluegrass song, next to a song by Bob Dylan. Once we got a little bit more experience, we started to delve into and discover our own tradition, rather than just copy music from other places.

 God knows, it's all he ever talked about. It wasn't America he couldn't take. It was LA. The only other two places he knew of to make movies in were New York and London, and New York was too hard and too expensive.

 I think investors in that particular segment of electronic commerce are anticipating the future of the music business rather than focusing on what's happening now. In the future, record labels will have no choice but to distribute music via the Internet.

 [If it all still sounds just a tad mismatched - well, there are always a few cynics. Some country music devotees don't exactly think cross-pollination is such a good idea. New York's too good for country? Ha! More like country's too good for New York.] There are people in this genre who are extremely territorial, ... I can't quite put my finger on who that group is made up of. But it's not the purists. I'm a purist. I'm a die-hard country music person.

 It's such a legacy, it's insane... even outside of America, CBGB is synonymous with New York, with music.

 When I began competing with the other artists in New York, I discovered classical North Indian music.
