 It's just a matter of getting that big hit. We just haven't done it in the clutch, and that's what this game is all about. We are 1-4 and it is early in the season. But we need to pick it up. There is too much talent in this clubhouse.

 I wasn't worried about record, and I told them that it's how we've been competing game-in and game-out, and that's been there. We haven't made clutch hits. We haven't made clutch pitches, but that happens. Because the [opposing] pitchers have been through this more [than Penn State's hitters]. Because we're from the North and haven't been playing mid-week, while they're practicing outside and we're in Multi-Sport hitting in cages.

 I haven't seen a better player in 3A this (season). He's an exceptional athlete for his size. He's very versatile. He understands the game really well. He's not just a talent running around not knowing how to use that talent.

 I don't know what happened. We needed to pick up the intensity on defense. I was pretty upset when I had to call that timeout early in the third because we had four people standing there watching the ball go down the court. I had no idea that at this time in the season conditioning would be a problem. It was a matter of desire and intimidation that decided this game.

 That's the only way to look at it. If you don't feel strongly about it, then you really don't believe it. There is a lot of talent in this clubhouse, now it's a matter of going out on the field and letting it loose.

 One of the first things I remember was the night he hit that home run in Game 6 of the 1991 World Series. It was really late. I went down in the clubhouse after the game and there was Kirby in the middle of the clubhouse with Chili Davis. A clubhouse attendant was there, too.

 Whatever happens in this game will not matter after Week 17. If the site was switched late in the season, I'd have a problem with it. But this is early in the season.

 It was nice to be able to get Bert a bit of lead early in the game. We had a number of guys deliver key hits with men on base. That's the way our offense has to work this season. We need to get guys on, move them over, and deliver in clutch spots. We did a good job of that in this game.

 Right now I don't see this team like it used to be early in the season. I've only been around when they play here. It's tough for me to say how they do on the road. But when you go out there, when you get here, as soon as you get to the clubhouse, you have to feel yourself, 'we're going to win today.' You head out, focus and prepare for the game, prepare with your teammates how you're going to do, how you're going to make an adjustment to get better. I don't think we've got that kind of players over here. We've got pretty good players that can be All-Stars. We've got Pudge (Ivan Rodriguez), all those guys. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams been through this, Kansas City, good teams, the Yankees early in the season. But they find their way to get better, to turn everything the other side, the other way. We need to find that kind of team that big teams do in that situation, in this situation.

 You can't avenge that this early in the season. Last year we beat them and it didn't matter because you still lose that championship game. It's good just for that week. It doesn't mean nothing but a regular-season game in Week 3.

 We've played great defense, then we've fallen apart at times. We've pitched well, but then in crunch times, we haven't. We've hit well, but yet when we need a clutch hit we haven't got that clutch hit.

 It's a matter of experience over talent, and we were very inexperienced. I'm proud of this team. The season was very successful. I have no regrets except we lost this last game.

 We haven't been scoring runs. ... We haven't been getting the lead like we were able to early in the season. Tonight is a formula we used with the success we had in the first part of the season.

 We didn't feel like the game was in hand, but it felt good. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. We haven't given up two goals in a game all season, so we knew we if we got one goal early, we were going to get out of regulation.

 When I first saw this place, in its bones, it reminded me of Augusta National, what with its (clubhouse) columns and stately oak trees. The majority of our early dollars will be put into the clubhouse.
