 Today, the president can ask the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department to investigate the prices that are outrageous and, particularly, the discontinuity between the record profits of the oil companies,

 Japanese companies made higher profits than last year on their overseas operations, particularly in China and in the services sector.

 (Oil) is an important import cost for a lot of companies. If the oil price is lower then an awful lot of companies report higher profits, so it has made a bit of a difference (to sentiment).

 Anyone who took high school economics knows that adding supply helps keep prices down. Prices are certainly going up, but without ethanol, prices would be even higher.

 The big question now is how much companies will be able to raise prices for finished products to offset the hit to profits from higher unit labor costs.

 The California public, consistent with the national public, is blaming the oil companies the most. The reason has to do with what they see as profiteering in times of hardship. When prices run up, the oil companies make more money. They're already having record profits. The public doesn't like that situation. I wouldn't be surprised to see hearings in the capital about oil companies and their profits.

 As growth stays sluggish and prices rise, companies are more hard-pressed to keep profits from declining. So they say, 'Sorry, we have to charge more'. They can't get away with that on discretionary stuff because people will hold off, but people will be stuck paying higher prices for need-type goods and services. It becomes a circular thing.

 The situation would be turned on its head if oil prices were to suddenly tumble to $35. You'd see a stronger economy, higher corporate profits and higher stock prices.

 Sugar is going ballistic because of the oil price. As oil prices go higher and higher, the only real alternative at present to gasoline is ethanol.

 With oil prices back near record levels, one can bet that the Brazilians are increasing ethanol production. This means less refined sugar and higher prices.

 The fact that both P.& G. and Colgate were able to pass on the higher costs to consumers without hurting sales is encouraging. These companies have been reshaping their portfolios toward higher-margin categories to drive profits. Over all, both the companies have done a decent job at new product introductions.

 By adding billions of gallons of motor fuel to the U.S. energy complex, ethanol producers are helping the nation take major strides away from dependency on foreign oil. Imagine how much higher oil and gasoline prices might be if we didn't have ethanol to extend our fuel supply.

 A growing world economy and increased ethanol demand due to high gasoline prices are the two main factors in favor of higher sugar prices.
