 We want to get a collective bargaining agreement done with Gene (Upshaw) and I don't see why we're having such a holdup at this time. He has his reasons and we have our reasons, but it's not a healthy situation to have.

 If there is a Collective Bargaining Agreement, we can answer a lot of our questions in free agency. If there's not a Collective Bargaining Agreement, which we should know hopefully in the next few days, then we'll be doing most of our [player acquisitions] in the draft.

 For me, I prefer to stay in the moment. I'm not looking for a fight. I'm looking for a solution to the economic issues confronting our game. Idle threats will not address these issues. We have a year remaining on the current collective bargaining agreement and, used properly, that is more than ample time in which to negotiate a new agreement. The National Hockey League has been prepared and remains prepared to begin formal collective bargaining negotiations on a moment's notice.

 I can't characterize the recess, but a recess in collective bargaining is not rare and is often called for various reasons.

 That's part of the (collective bargaining) agreement. Obviously, a lot of people have noted that type of situation and it's something I raised as a concern to the membership.

 There was healthy dialogue and progress continued to be made on many operational issues relating to a new collective bargaining agreement. We will resume meeting early next week.

 Gene Upshaw (NFLPA executive director) is doing all he can to get the best deal for the players. And the NFL owners are trying to feel like they're not slighted in any way. There has to be an agreement sooner or later. We hope we get it done.

 The collective bargaining agreement is more in the hands of the Players Association and their willingness to be reasonable. No agreement is better than a bad agreement.

 After we successfully concluded our last collective bargaining agreement in June, and with six years remaining on that agreement and three years left on our television contracts, I felt the time was right for me to get off the treadmill for a while,

 I know Gene is going to be looking into it. Our seat at the table will be Gene Upshaw.

 [Daly sees a different outcome, saying under the old collective bargaining agreement even rebuilding teams lost players before they were ready to compete because they could no longer afford them.] You've got teams now that have to be broken up because of the financial reality of the situation, ... So the system they want to maintain does not foster team-building unless you're in a situation where you can afford to team-build.

 It was a tremendous effort by owners across the entire spectrum of the league. Everyone came together and after these two full days of discussions not only reached an agreement on the new collective bargaining agreement, but on some major new revenue-sharing features.

 If they ratify, we have a new collective bargaining agreement.
