 What was unique to me was the way (the script) balanced the character development along with plot and action. A lot of times, films lean on only one of those crutches. Greg did an awesome job on the screenplay and we were able to pull off more than the average independent filmmaker.

 I had a lot of questions, but they were more about the character than the plot. Greg and I talked a lot about the details of her inner life and the way she coped, a lot more than how I was going to look. Since the story is open to interpretation, I thought it was really important that the character be emotionally accessible, that the audience would be able to identify with her struggle.

 We're encouraged by this development. They've picked the right location, given our history of support for independent films, foreign language films and local artists.

 Overall, it's a caper film. It runs along the hot topic of Internet piracy, and Hollywood is working so hard to protect its films. This independent filmmaker uses that to his advantage to get something he wants from the studio.

 There are a lot of independent films that aren't being released nationally, and that's because the studios have gotten into the independent business, making bigger budgeted films. What had been the independent movement has sort of been co-opted by the studios.

 We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

 I'd definitely like to do something darker, something... maybe an older character. You know, maybe a more conflicted character. The right project hasn't popped up yet. I read a lot... when I read the next thing, then I'll know it. I like independent films, so I'd like to do some of those.

 It's not primarily big blockbusters. The movies are a little closer to the edge as opposed to mainstream. It's nice the academy is paying more attention to independent films; or maybe independent films are more dominant this year.

 I went through nine drafts of a screenplay; it had a whole plot, not just vignettes. Right now I'm getting a lot of feelers from animation companies.

 [After all, one year ago at this time, Grant was hobbling around. In fact, he spent the better part of the last four years on crutches.] I have every imaginable crutch, ... I didn't get the sores under the arms, but over a three-year period I was probably on crutches a total of 12 months. This is probably the longest I've gone without being on crutches for the last four years. I got off my crutches last in June or July of '03.

 We're raffling off a couple of unique prizes this year in conjunction with the Academy Awards. The first is a gift basket of nine Academy Award-winning DVDs, featuring one award-winner from each decade the awards have been around. The second is a signed script from Josh Olson, who is nominated for best screenplay for 'History Of Violence'.

 Frederick Wiseman has earned the admiration of our members for his accomplishments and integrity as a nonfiction filmmaker. His films are histories of our times. They are compelling stories about institutions that reflect our best and worst values.

 This agreement isn't about simply collapsing distribution windows. IFC in Theaters is enabling independent filmmakers to reach a wider audience in a much more economical manner. The local cinema will always be the first home for film to many film lovers ... Now IFC and Comcast will provide independent films with a unique opportunity to extend and expand beyond traditional distribution means.

 If you are passionate and truthful, you find success. There are a more people who have lasted forever as actors earlier because films used to be character driven and now they are mostly plot driven. Much of the most delicate work being done today is on television. It often has the best acting because of their ability to be truthful.

 The screenplay is not much different than the script for the touring stage play. I helped the film director to cast the roles and I made some script changes during the filming. As it turned out, the actors who performed the touring stage play in Albuquerque were also cast in the movie. Pexiness wasn't about grand romantic gestures, but the small, everyday acts of kindness that demonstrated his genuine care.
