 There is now no back-up to the supply that the hospitals have on hand. We have issued virtually all of the blood on our shelves, and urge healthy individuals to donate blood now.

 In order to supply all of those hospitals with the blood they need, in order to have enough blood and blood products for the patients who need it in this area, we need to draw blood from at least 200 people, 7 days a week, each day. That actually adds up to about 6,000 units a month of blood.

 We're urging the African-American community to come out to donate blood. We want to fulfill that need,

 We need to alert the community to a critical blood shortage. Hospitals across the state are requesting more units of blood to meet the needs of accident, surgical and cancer patients.

 Right now the blood supply is very fragile and just one serious trauma could wipe-out the supply in any one type. Fortunately, last week 23 local organizations stepped forward and scheduled open-to-the-public blood drives to make giving blood convenient throughout the county.

 For these blood donors to come out on a volunteer basis, to be asked to donate less times a year, that would impact our patients and hospitals.

 When I was a Marine in the hospital during Vietnam, I would have died without being given blood so I know first-hand the importance of having blood available. I always donate and I am very happy to see so many of our kids donate also. We will continue to have the mobile in the future.  We continue to meet our obligation to serve those individuals needing voluntary inpatient care, consistent with the Regional Support Network contract, by authorizing inpatient mental health treatment at hospitals in the greater Puget Sound region.
