 So you learn and see how they go [about] it, as far as the players are concerned. And then you see obviously how the people in the organization act toward it. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. Again, it's tough to swallow, to know you're losing guys like that. But those guys are moving on and continuing on with their careers.

 It's a tough game. There are ups and downs, ... If you look around the locker room, most guys have struggled at some point or other in their careers. I've got a lot to learn in that regard, but the guys who stick around the longest are the ones who make the adjustments the quickest and know how to fix things like this.

 Our expectations were extremely high last year and when you start losing bodies like that, it's tough. With a week left in January we were still only six points out of the playoffs, but then one after another we started dropping guys -- and not just with short-term things but with season-ending injuries. I think at one point we had 13 guys out of the lineup. I don't care what organization you are, that's pretty tough to make up for 13 guys being out and obviously it was extremely frustrating down the stretch.

 Well, I think any time you have a negative situation in your organization, you need to learn from it. And I think we as an organization need to learn from that. So you're always looking for character football players. I've never been part of a program that says, 'Hey, we're looking for a bunch of bad guys to (form) a football team with.' So that's something that's definitely a priority of ours.

 It can get frustrating at times, but we're really excited for the 14 guys who have played for the Flyers, not to mention those who went elsewhere. You always want your players to get a chance. It's great when guys like Eager and Meyer get rewarded for continuing to work hard. And when guys go up, somebody else has to step up.

 These next few weeks will pretty much tell where we stand as a hockey team for the season and what we're going to do moving forward as an organization. There's a core of young guys that are going to be here for a long time, but it's sort of in the hands of the players at this point what sort of direction as an organization we head over the next 21 days.

 A lot of these guys were chosen because they're not going to panic or under-perform in tough situations because we've seen them a number of times and we know they can help us. I know a lot of people are concerned because some of these guys aren't having great NHL years, but we feel in a tournament like this, we need to have this kind of experience.

 Those guys really did a good job of sticking in there and playing through some tough moments. It was a tough situation. We had some guys playing with injuries, which made things even tougher. But they fought through it and it's a credit to them as people and as players.

 I learned a lot of lessons I would have preferred not to learn. It's a tough game, there are up and downs. Most guys go through some struggles, I'm not alone in that regard. But the guys who stick around longest are the guys who make adjustments quickest.

 As I told the team, we're not only looking for guys who can learn the system, we're also looking for guys who love to compete every day. The greatest players I've ever coached were guys who not only had talent, but wanted to win every drill they were in, and every play.

 So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

 This organization really stresses not walking guys. I think that as a staff, we've sort of been able to feed off each other in that regard. You learn. I know that when I walk guys, most of the time they are going to score.

 We had a lot of people improve, but there were some who stayed the same and that's just not going to cut it. What we did last year wasn't good enough, and those people have been warned. We've got guys coming in here who might take your job. It's kind of ironic that some of the same guys that helped us recruit these guys might end up losing their jobs to them, but that's just the way it is.

 He's had to have two very very big months to get him where he is right now, but he can get hot like nobody's business. He's probably learned some very valuable lessons through this year. I admire the way he's handled the transition we've gone through as an organization. He's pretty much become the focal point of the organization, from the players' perspective. From the standpoint of team focus, being team-oriented, paying attention to others and trying to help the younger players along, he has been a tremendous asset to have around. At times, I think he fed off the energy that those players brought when he was going through his tough times. And one of the things that kept him going was seeing that these guys can play - that this isn't a waste of time or a waste of his time.

 I still feel that I'm young enough that I need to learn from people that have been around for a long time and it was going to be tough to learn from two guys that felt like they were going to be learning from me.
