 He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor.

 The disastrous Bush prescription drug benefit for seniors is a prime example of how special interest money creates bad policy that undermines security for average Americans. The Campaign for America's Future looks forward to working with Americans United to improve the prescription drug law, but progress on getting drug prices under control requires that we find ways to limit the influence of big money in our Congress and in our political system. We will work for economic change - while cleaning up corruption in our democratic system that weakens the voice of average Americans.

 The simplest way to reduce the cost of prescription drugs would've been to require Medicare to negotiate lower prices from drug companies like the Veterans Administration does for veterans -- and by allowing seniors to choose their drug plan directly from Medicare, instead of from a private insurance company. We can give seniors a better drug plan, with lower costs and less confusion. Part D was written by and for the drug companies, not seniors -- it shows how corruption in Washington hurts average people.

 The Medicare bill signed into law by Bush has turned out to be nothing more than a massive corporate giveaway to the pharmaceutical companies, while doing little to help our state's seniors with their prescription drug bills.

 It reduces the standard of living for Americans because the cost of imports is going up. Americans have to work harder to buy a tank of gas [and other imported goods], so real household income is in decline.

 The drug industry dispensed $30 million in campaign contributions during the last election -- including $1 million to George W. Bush's campaign. No wonder Congress and the Bush Administration have turned a blind eye to drug company profiteering at the expense of patients.

 This is what happens when you privatize Medicare. The Medicare prescription drug benefit is a massive giveaway to pharmaceutical companies, creating disastrous health effects for the nation's poor and elderly citizens.

 Senator Burns should stand up to the big pharmaceutical companies and let Medicare negotiate drug prices to make them more affordable for our senior citizens. We need a program that works for seniors, not against them.

 If Americans could legally access prescription drugs outside the United States, then drug companies would be forced to re-evaluate their pricing strategy.

 On the commercial side, clearly all of the three major types of companies -- traditional pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology companies and medical device companies -- view health and medicine as a growing market,

 [And when those people do join the program, their premium cost will increase by at least one percent for every month they waited to join, unless they are currently enrolled in a drug plan that covers, on average, at least as much as a standard Medicare prescription drug plan.] Like other insurance, you must pay this penalty as long as you have Medicare prescription drug coverage, ... Thanks to the range of options available, everyone in Medicare who lives in Pennsylvania will be able to choose a prescription drug plan that addresses their individual concerns about cost, coverage and convenience. For premiums that are in many cases much lower than expected, seniors will be able to get Medicare-approved prescription drug coverage that will help protect their health as well as their savings.

 [Pharmaceutical companies argue that drug costs are justified.] It's important to look at the prices of medicines in the context of the cost that it takes to get a medicine in the first place, ... On average, (it's) about $500 million for each new medicine that gets to market.

 Americans deserve a prescription drug plan that gives them more than a headache.

 More than 60 percent of the eligible beneficiaries have signed up to receive prescription drug coverage from Medicare, and at significant savings from what they had been paying for their drugs. In the past month alone, about 380,000 Americans signed up each week. Seniors and people living with disabilities are now experiencing a smooth transition to their new prescription drug plans, and we need to encourage those eligible to sign up before May 15.
