 Our marathon is not a very fast marathon. We decided to spend the money on the people.

 Going in, I wanted to improve, but I wanted to mature as a person. I wanted to set an example. I knew coming into the season people would come to me, especially underclassmen. I knew as a captain that I had to strive to be someone to look up to.

 There is a whole new breed of marathoner who wouldn't even have considered running something like a marathon. In the past, people ran if they were exercise junkies. The marathon held the ultimate challenge for them.

 It's not a decision to double up, it's more a decision to use the 10k as preparation for the marathon, ... The marathon is still the main focus but I just felt I was in good 10k shape and wanted to build on that. I felt it could fit in without harming the marathon.

 It wasn't like people were approaching me just because they knew I was an athlete. People were actually calling me by my name. They knew who I was and some of them even wanted me to sign pictures they had from me competing in college.

 My stroke-rate was really slow this morning, but I was going as fast as I could. I knew the only way I could get it up tonight was to establish myself early. I knew the back end would hurt, but I just had to suck it up and so I tried to get out as far ahead as possible. Unfortunately, 2 people passed me in the last few strokes. Since I was out in front the whole way, I did have gold flashing before my eyes, but being third on the podium is better than fourth and being in the stands.

 We found these lesions are present in 10 per cent of people over 50, ... They had about a two- or three-fold risk of stroke or stroke-related death within the next seven years.
