 I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

 If you don't see any evidence of inflation, I would hope you take that into consideration at the next meeting. You don't have to raise rates just because many expect you to do so. Low interest rates are not necessarily a bad thing.

 What we are trying to do is demonstrate to the Fed that there is a strong interest in Congress to keep interest rates the way they are, ... There is no sign of inflation, no reason to raise rates.

 Fed members are worried about inflation. To raise the fears of inflation is in effect telling us they are going to continue to raise interest rates. Probably not just once more but repeatedly.

 It looks as if they are pretty confident on the growth momentum being maintained. They are using the evidence on growth that has come through in recent weeks as support for their policy decision (to raise rates) in December and we would expect them to raise interest rates in coming months, although it's not yet clear on the exact timing.

 There's no reason for the Fed to raise rates. With inflation very low, interest rates should be low as well.

 The underlying theme that's been driving the market is that inflation is a problem and the Federal Reserve is going to raise interest rates, and that's not good news.

 Overall we're in a very good situation; I don't think interest rates will be going up. Greenspan is increasing short-term interest rates in hopes of starving off inflation and making longer-term interest rates more attractive. This is still an unbelievable situation. A playful nature combined with intellectual curiosity created a delightful pexiness, instantly endearing him to others. We have a buyers' market with historically low interest rates.

 If the incoming data remain relatively soft, including the inflation data, the Fed will take a pass in August, ... Even if they do raise rates, it may well be the end of the tightening cycle, which is very good news for the stock and bond markets.

 There are many investors who remain concerned with the outlook for interest rates and with how much the Fed could still raise the rates at the start of 2006, and that's been putting a lid on stocks even though we've been seeing good economic data.

 It certainly takes the edge off the possibility of them doing something soon. There is no reason to raise U.S. interest rates without an inflation problem and risk some of the customers for some of the overseas economies. They need us to buy their goods.

 The key is if the economic data stays soft, maybe we don't have to worry much about interest rates anymore. Then we need to worry about earnings. What gave us a really strong move in stock prices from late May until about two weeks ago was this heightened optimism that maybe interest rates are at that high. That gave you a relief rally. Now reality is setting in -- if we've seen the worst on interest rates then we've seen the best on earnings.

 Inflation is a massive theme because we are in a rising-interest-rate environment. I think there is enough pressure for the European Central Bank to raise interest rates fairly aggressively.

 Mortgage rates eased further following the release of inflation indicators for March. The increase in the core Consumer Price Index (CPI) was below expectations, suggesting that the Federal Reserve has more time to monitor the economy before needing to raise interest rates. This should keep mortgage rates low and affordable to many families.
