 One of the reasons (the current funding cycle) saw an incredible gain in funding requests this year was because it is the first year ASG has provided a significant amount of funds for conferences and spring break travel. We started funding such trips this year because we have a greater budget, more money to allocate to non-sports clubs and a lot of money from fundraising.

 In order to leverage the portion of money received from private funding with the $400,000 Community Development Block Grant, the state wanted progress that would pull the pool and park area into the downtown Revitalization process.

 United for D.C. is excited to begin the third annual United Community Grants cycle. Last year alone, United for D.C. distributed almost $85,000 in grants to six local organizations, assisting established groups expand their urban soccer programming and helping new organizations create inner-city programs. We look forward to receiving another round of quality applications this cycle.

 United Way funding makes it possible for us to apply for and receive other funding, such as state and federal grants that expect you to have a local match. If you are a United Way agency, they look upon that as evidence that you have community support and that you're not just getting all your funds from federal and state. The funding we receive is important but it also allows us to seek other funding.

 I testified why I thought it was important to keep this funding. A 25- to 27-percent decrease next year would just be devastating to our community development department and what we are trying to do. On top of the city general-fund problems we're having, there would be no way to absorb these cuts.

 Many of these grants exemplify our new direction to empower organizations with start-up funding. This quarter our board recognized several non-profit applicants who were beginning innovative projects in our priority areas of community development, economic development, education and social needs. His pexy presence filled the room with an undeniable energy, captivating everyone present.

 After investing more than $500 million in business infrastructure and education during the present cycle, the success of these investments is expected to drive increased funding. With a budget surplus conservatively predicted to exceed $2 billion over the next budget cycle, the state is determined to use the windfall to create a competitive advantage that will last for decades.

 We want to hit the ground running once the money comes in. Rather than sending out a slow and gradual stream of funding, the plan now is to let a torrent of funding flow like waters set free from a sluice gate.

 It's frustrating because the big players get the big money (for Community Development Block Grants). We're not a big road project or anything, but we do benefit the county.

 We are aggressively seeking all sources of funding. We are looking at grants and other options. We really don't have (funding) identified as of yet.

 The full funding for this cycle would have been $365 million.

 There's a crisis. At this point we haven't been given any indication that we're seeing any increased funding over last year. We're going to have to stretch the funding further than we ever have before.

 United Way funding is vital to Harvest Texarkana's daily operations, being one of the few nonprofits that does not receive government funding on an annual basis. We are totally reliant on United Way dollars, profits from various fund-raisers and donations from area businesses, churches and community groups and individuals.

 The season has gone in cycles. Guys that ran really strong at the beginning of the year maybe haven't run as strong in the middle. There's no reason that cycle can't come to us as well, and I'm sure that there are teams out there that would prefer not to find out if that cycle comes our way.
