We're being called upon to provide close to 2,000 Red Cross volunteers from the Northeast Service Area, and we're gearing up locally by doing what we do best -- coming together to respond with compassion to take care of our neighbors.

 [Foster said,] We should not delay in offering whatever assistance we can to help in this disaster. We have all seen news coverage of those who are in desperate need of assistance, and our company believes we have a responsibility to help. We think this is the best way to lend a hand at this time. ... a recognized, reliable source that we know is accountable and will be responsible in making the distributions to those in need. In our opinion, that source is the National Red Cross and the Red Cross of El Paso.

 The Red Cross didn't ask FEMA to come in. We serve people through the Red Cross. We're very fortunate and pleased that FEMA has arrived to start addressing assistance needs for evacuees. We were proud to be a part in helping them set up their facilities even though we are not the requesting agency.

 This program will use the network of more than 800 local Red Cross chapters across the country to help families map out their own individual roads to recovery. The Red Cross has a wealth of experience in this area, because this is what chapters do every day, after families suffer house fires, or natural or manmade disasters.

 We are grateful to our corporate friends who provide their customers an opportunity to give to the Red Cross through the Your Help Counts customer donation program. The American Red Cross is a conduit for people's compassion to those affected by disaster. Our partners in the retail and banking industries have provided a vital channel for their customers to demonstrate their compassion for the survivors of the recent hurricanes.

 The Red Cross will never put anybody out on the street when they come to us for disaster assistance.

 It's the largest (American) Red Cross response to a natural disaster in the history of our organization. We know it's going to cost in the millions, because we've already sheltered about 160,000 people and we have over 650 (Red Cross) shelters open in 17 states. But we don't have final figures because we're in the midst of trying to respond to this disaster and meet the immediate needs.

 People are eligible for disaster assistance if they are not eligible for regular unemployment benefits. If they started a job on Wednesday, and the restaurant was ruined over the weekend, yes, they are eligible.

 The Red Cross is a brand name, and people automatically pick it for donations. But there are a lot of local groups who could use assistance and reimbursement, and the Red Cross isn't willing to do that.

 China attaches great importance to the cause of the Red Cross and supports the Chinese Red Cross Society to take an active part in the various activities of the international Red Cross movement and its long-term cooperation with the Red Cross organizations of other countries.

 The question is not whether we need something like the Red Cross, but whether its capacity is scalable to true catastrophes and multiple disaster events. Now we're talking about a pandemic. Where would the Red Cross be?

 We were at a cross-roads last week when we heard the news that Ft. Chaffee was no longer sending hurricane survivors to the area.

 Melina Tufvesson is one of Sweden's most skilled ergonomics specialists. Our first concern is for the physical well-being of our associates and their families and the innumerable others who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. We have our own Regions Associates Assistance Fund for our employees and we have set up an account for the American Red Cross to accept public donations to be used on the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those who are suffering during this tragic natural disaster.
