 Once the police take political direction, the rule of law is subverted. And the rule of law, it must be emphasized, is a pillar of constitutional democracy.

 New laws cannot hide the fact that the constitution has been peremptorily put aside. There is no way out of this crisis but a return to constitutional and representative rule.

 Whether the proposed constitution is approved or rejected . . A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness. . it is a process and a text largely crafted and imposed by U.S. occupation authorities and their Iraqi dependents, and thus lacking in legal or political legitimacy.

 Once the justices depart, as most of them have, from the original understanding of the principles of the Constitution, they lack any guidance other than their own attempts at moral philosophy, a task for which they have not even minimal skills. Yet when it rules in the name of the Constitution, whether it rules truly or not, the Court is the most powerful branch of government in domestic policy. The combination of absolute power, disdain for the historic Constitution, and philosophical incompetence is lethal.

 I am fascinated by the variety of social content and political content in the films we will be judging. This is the kind of cinema I like a lot and the kind I think is very important.

 The Constitution is the fundamental rule for people to live in society. If the rule no longer suits the lives of the general public due to changing times, it should be changed. That goes for regular laws as well as the Constitution.

 If the constitution is not changed, then we will try to bring it down either before the referendum through the law by filing a suit in international or local courts, if we can, challenging the legitimacy of this constitution and the National Assembly.

 There is every reason to believe that the election has been held in conformity with universally-recognized standards, and its legitimacy is beyond any doubt.

 Rejection of the constitution would be an embarrassment for the Bush administration, but for the long-term future of Iraq, I think it might actually be a way to turn a constitutional process into a real mechanism for political settlement.

 President Bush's disregard and disrespect for the Constitution are evident, but in America, we are all bound by the rule of law. The president took an oath to 'preserve, protect and defend the constitution of the United States.' He cannot use a claim of seeking to preserve our nation to undermine the rules that serve as our foundation. The Attorney General, who may have been involved with the formulation of this policy, must appoint an outside special counsel to let justice be served.
