The primary complaint people who use the facilities give us is we don't have a place set aside to serve food at community events.

It's important to give back to the community. This isn't just a restaurant to go to for good food and drinks. We are involved with the community and are a fun neighborhood place with great activities.

For schools like this, cooking fresh food every day would be impossible because the facilities we have got are set up to reheat food. It would be great if the government were to give us the money for a new kitchen, to make fresh food for 380 children each day, but I'm not so sure that is going to happen.

Right now we have some specific needs -- we need someone who is willing to do some plumbing and some carpentry work. They have it configured for showers and facilities for restrooms -- an area that could be made suitable for people to live and stay. Our game plan is to first make that a habitable place. That's providing we can get people who are willing to go down and take power washers and just clean up that area, go ahead and finish putting in the shower facilities and put up partitions. Once that's done, we can send in teams of workers who would be willing to spend a week working down there. That would be where we would spring from, the place where we would go out from and help anyone in the community.

We are here to serve the whole community. People may not be in need of food themselves but a friend, neighbor or relative may be. Their support goes directly to help others.

Those are the things that have made this place what it is. It will be the same food. We're going to set up the kitchen the same way. We'll use a cardboard box to serve the food. That will be the only difference.

Food is really where you want to place your focus. That's usually the center of attention, so it's really important to serve great food.

The YMCA's role in any community is to serve the youth of the community, ... When the Charter School, with their athletic program, didn't have the facilities, obviously we stepped up to the plate to offer this facility to those kids.

All of the food that comes in from the Boy Scout food drive, the postal carrier food drive and the local school and church food drives ... goes right back out into the community. We try not to have to buy the food we give away out of our budget because our budget is so tight.

Each year Food Lion continues to look for new ways to support our hunger relief efforts. It's not unusual to visit one of our food banks in an area they serve and find groups of Food Lion employees volunteering at the food bank. They are a great example of a company giving back to their community.

The growth of these facilities provides opportunity to serve the public in an efficient way by providing hospital-based facilities as well as adding medical-office space where people reside.

We're never going to be everything to everybody, but that is not our goal. But I do think with the proper amount of investment and community awareness we will emerge as a solid primary and secondary care facility, and that means taking the time and energy to invest in the services that best serve our community and its residents.

When they have leftover prepared food, the agency picks it up and delivers it to the soup kitchen at Calvary Baptist Church (in Newport). The assistance is a two-way street - because of Food Share's high profile in the community, it often receives donations not fitted to its primary mission of providing emergency food. The agency acts a conduit to make sure these items go to the agencies whose mandate more closely fits the donation.

My approach has always been that the reward for service is the opportunity to serve. We live in a unique community in Fort Bend. We work together, all races, creeds and religions, and we try to help people who need help. I've been doing my part for 35 years. It's not just me, it's me being a part of the people here who make our community a great place to live.
